    "Democracy is now back to 1985 levels according to some metrics, with 72 percent of the world’s population now living under autocracy. Russia and China are less free today than 20 years ago. And so is the United States".

        @Climatehistories

        Been saying the regression/devolution words most of the 21st century. There really was a Y2K / 2012 that changed the world for the worse, not end; even though it seems it.

            @Climatehistories
            You know, from the point of view, of the REST OF THE WORLD, ie. not the WESTERN point of view, Russia and China represent FREEDOM, oh by the way!

            What do the West know about freedom? They are the ones who enslaved and colonised the world. And it's NOT in the past for the REST OF US, you SHITS!

              @Climatehistories I'm afraid that's not 1985, but rather 1930s.

                @Climatehistories I'm of the belief that (short of people mass-boycotting society in its entirety, willing if need be to return to the stone age), we are about to reach the last century of human rights and democracy, with them being effectively suppressed for good by technocrats in power, through their means of propaganda and surveillance.

                  Human rights, freedom, liberty, mean nothing without public land and water. There is a severe disappearance of both, while population is increasing public space is shrinking, so dependence on landlords leaves few options. Slavery is not measured by world watches.

                    @Mattsdspatch @Climatehistories Thanks. Did not know that about the Netherlands. Any links?

                    My brother could not handle the British 'how are you' questions with no intent to hear the reply- preferred the Dutch directness. So he moved to live in Hoorn in the north.

                    @NicelyManifest @Climatehistories

                    perhaps a bit obtuse there; my apologies. Ancient myth of Hydra, a parable about the implacable monster of water, always seeking its own level. "Cut off its head, and seven more grow." Dam it over here, and damned if it doesn't reappear over there. Capital behaves the same way. Holland was successfully carved out of the sea over centuries and developed a culture that keeps the dread Hydra at bay. If people can do that, there is hope for containing Capitalism.

                      @Mattsdspatch @Climatehistories Maybe Holland has a unique advantage. It also has a public that express their views to power vehemently. Like the French in fact.

                      International corruption experts in a book I read said you can never get rid of corruption - just keep chipping away at very often.
