@CarstenBoll I was at a dance class and someone kept apologizing to the instructor about doing it wrong and I really, really wanted to jump in and say something along these lines, but never found a great time.

& also, doing them is (irritatingly) a prerequisite for getting good at them.

I use the literal translation in English too, because it's not a dilettante or dabbler, but more positive. Just someone happily doing something they are not expert at, in a situation where that is fine and enjoyable.

@CarstenBoll OMG yes! This. I used to teach art to kids - not professionally - I called them "creative classes" and as one kid's mom was leaving, she said, "oh great now he wants to be an artist when he grows up." 0_0 - Erm. No. Now he has a way to express himself, whether it's well done or not, for his entire life.

@nomdeb @CarstenBoll Maybe the kid does want to be an artist. Maybe he doesn't. Maybe he will change his mind about what he wants to be a dozen times before he turns 20.
But he does have a way to express himself, to explore the world, to amuse himself. He may have considered at least one option for a career, and if he rejects it he's one step closer to figuring out what he really wants and is good at.

@reiayanami @CarstenBoll Every artist has a stash of things that didn't work. Part of becoming an artist, if that is your goal, is developing the taste to assess your own work.

I'm not saying art will treat mental illness; it won't. But if art helps the ordinary feelings of frustration and being down in the dumps that everyone faces occasionally, it can have financial as well as non-financial value.

art work doesn't have have a price attached to it as a commodity. It can just be art you enjoy creating and owning. -

I was saying that the process of doing any kind of art may have a quantifiable (approximate) value for the benefit it provides.
Last year I wrote an article that required a 3+ mile walk, repeated three times, which seemed to result in my losing five pounds over two months, with no other action taken regarding diet or exercise. That's a quantifiable health benefit.
