@Natasha_Jay Adrian Tchaikovsky in that crowd is an interesting choice, especially as his books are very much tech and species exotica, not talking about humans so much, imo.
No offence to Tchaikovsky, good stuff, but a heavy-hitter title like this is surely missing Ursula Le Guinn..

It's a lot more prescient than 1984 in that it predicts that the populace will be numbed by bread and circuses rather than an overt militaristic takeover.
