@danmccullough I followed it around the yard with camera in hand. While flying it flashed a brilliant red color. I saw it land on the backside of this tree. Spent another ~5-10 minutes creeping up and trying find it without scaring it off again

@lfisk My original photo had a hornet in it as well. But I thought that might confuse things a bit.
The hornet seemed totally unaware even though the mother was only ~ 2 inches from it. -
