"Corruption is the operating principle of autocratic rule ...
Those who have not studied the movement often express some surprise on seeing the connection between Christian nationalism and corruption. These people are supposed to have Jesus and the Bible on their minds, not Mammon, right? But the connection entirely unsurprising."

"Does anybody remember Jerry Falwell Jr., the high and holy Christian nationalist whose endorsement of Trump in 2016 was pivotal but who then lost his job in a morass of yacht-based sex and money scandals? This is a movement that doesn’t just succumb to the occasional grifter, but rather produces them on an industrial scale, and then backs the grifter-in-chief all the way to the end of time."

@wdlindsy I lived in Charlotte NC during Jim Baker (PTL). and one of their neighbors was a friend of my sister - their house was well known for providing prescription drugs to the neighbors. I also have cousins that donated to PTL. Who are kind people.

@wdlindsy Yup. This is what is missing from so many people's understanding of fascist takeovers.
The damned fools take fascist words at face value, and divide fascists into different boxes depending on whether they claim to love the state or hate it.
Not realizing that a fascist will say whatever to get their hands on the money.

Christian Nationalism is an economic system too.
1. It imposes lower wages on POC, immigrants, & women
2. It mandates self-perpetuating social hierarchies like Jim Crow, that withholds education, health care, & economic mobility through segregation
3. It thwarts intergenerational wealth building by redlining housing & mortgage access
4. It thwarts change through democracy by voter suppression
5. It erodes civil rights through mass incarceration, austerity, rigged taxation

@wdlindsy FWIW, one of the common ways by which an authoritarian followers recognise the authoritarian leader is, they perceive him [sic] to be a special kind of man who "can do thing not permitted to mere mortals". Immorality is often explicitly a feature sought for in the Führer, although authoritarian streams have varied substantially in what kind of immorality is expected and what kind is unacceptable.
Historically, though, acquired visible deformities have been a far higher barrier to one's ability to maintain one's status as an authoritarian leader than anything that the leader might do. Some Byzantine emperors even made a point to mutilate the face of their predecessor and/or rivals rather than outright murdering them. (And some first murdered, then mutilated. "Overkill? What's that?")
