The musical expression of early cold war #FakeHarmony from the US of the 50s and 60s seems increasingly fitting for our times.

The musical expression of early cold war #FakeHarmony from the US of the 50s and 60s seems increasingly fitting for our times. The tongue-in-cheek apathy and powerlessness, the contrast between the pressure to conform and be happy on one side and the dread of the future, the almost ridiculous attraction to simple human desires, the overwhelm caused by the world ("I just want the simple life"), I feel all of it at times. Nat King Cole is balm for that part of me.

The game - and later on TV-series - Fallout perfectly captured this contrast in picking their soundtrack and I've been digging in to it again lately. It made me discover The Ink Spots back in the day who expressed this style on so many songs. This tongue-in-cheek ostensible "love song" that manages to also refer indirectly to the weight of the world (which perhaps is all you can do when the world is overwhelming, refer to it indirectly). One of my favorites: https://youtu.be/TmIwm5RElRs?si=ko7R4VWeV8B0WtGY

Crawl out through the fallout, baby
When they drop that bomb
Crawl out through the fallout
With the greatest of aplomb
When your white count's getting higher
Hurry, don't delay
I'll hold you close and kiss those
Radiation burns away

They're gonna make a big star out of me
We'll make the film about a man that's sad and lonely
And all I gotta do is act naturally
