@VeroniqueB99 #alt4you social media post. Original post is: "The relationship between smartphone/Internet use and loneliness was BIG." Children are lonelier than ever. Can anything be done?

The post quoting this reads: We invented suburbs where everybody lives a half-hour drive from their friends and there's no sidewalks or bike infrastructure and we blame smartphones for children being lonely.

Yeah but BROWN people were moving into urban areas, what else could be done? :0

White people inventing their own elaborate hell to live in is tradition at this point.

@VeroniqueB99 check out the city ordinances for Atherton, CA (techno-fascist ultra-rich white enclave in SF Bay Area where all the execs like Zuck and Marc Benioff live.

                It's pretty wild.

                    @arrrg @VeroniqueB99

This is such a weird take. Boomers created laws that treat "free roaming children," like we had into the early 2000's, as a crime. Kids are treated like delinquents and their parents are treated as negligent for letting their kids do this.

Like...the kids didn't do this to themselves. And their parents didn't create these laws.

We need to repeal those laws, stop punishing kids for being kids, create more spaces where kids are safe to just be kids, and focus on *actually* making the streets safer rather than just throwing money at police that don't help anyone and continuing to tear down community and social infrastructure.

@VeroniqueB99 suburbs are not new in the US, they've been there for decades, but this problem is new. it also exists in other regions of the world (eg: Europe where distance is not a problem). honestly i don't really see the connection between loneliness and suburbs.

and the dramatic increase everywhere coincides with the advent of the ever online lifestyle. while phones might not be the sole cause, they're surely a big part of the reason, that's undeniable.

I suffered from loneliness 30 years ago. This problem is absolutely not new.

And screens are not the cause. Screens saved my life. I had no one else to talk to.

I don't usually like to talk this harshly to people on Fedi, but in this case I feel like I have no choice, so here goes: go to hell, and take the rest of the “think of the children” crowd with you. You all aren't protecting children. You hate children and want them to suffer silently and die alone.

I'll add that the usual “solution” to this “new” problem is to shove surveillance cameras into everyone's home, including mine, and make it illegal to develop and use software like Linux and Fedi that protect the user's privacy.

All this at a time when privacy and anonymity are more important than ever for staying safe.

So not only is your movement a deadly threat to innocent children, it's also a deadly threat to innocent adults and families like me and mine.

Oh, and to top it off, only highly-profitable billion-dollar platforms like Facebook and X can afford age verification technology, so this would do the exact opposite of forcing everyone off Facebook and X and their notorious algorithms.

It would shut down places like this, denying everyone any alternative to Facebook and X.

That's what you're really campaigning for. A camera in every home, an algorithm judging every post, and lonely kids suffering in silence.

@VeroniqueB99 @MsHearthWitch This is a weird one for me because I grew up in an area not that populated and there were not that many kids around to play with and none of that had anything to do with smartphones or lack of sidewalks or missing bike lanes. It had to do with few people, and definitely no people of similar age or intellectual interests. As a child.

I wish i could have communicated with similar minded children in some way.
