I'm more upset than I've been in a while.

Totally understand the goal of "set and forget". I love set and forget.
But for critical path things, I personally find that a weekly routine of checks is a good thing to do. YMMV, but I was just pointing out to people that this works well for me. (And likely will work well for the unsophisticated computer users who are likely to have developed such non-computerized routines in their lives, which are the people we were originally talking about.)
100% OneDrivification is classic enshittification making things worse by drawing people into the prison walls.
(Another example is the fact that this kind of hand-driven "backing up texts" is to my observation nearly impossible. - if anyone knows of how to do this easily, I would love to hear it.)
Trust, but verify. (Also offline (and preferably offsite) copies are good.)
The recent events in Russia (Datacentres being taken out by missiles) make me wonder just how secure the old $Dayjob is under current conditions. (Tape backups to Iron Mountain's offsite store were replaced by continuous replication between datacentres - which are probably not that secure against air attack, etc.)
Modern warfare was not considered a risk when that decision was made. 3:O(>

@NatalyaD Skill issue lololol switch to linux u fxn n00b
@prism LOL! I do actually use Linux at home and for my needs it is more accessible than Windows usually is, but I am mainly able to use nix mainly cos I have a resident nerd to admin it for me. I work in disability support for uni students, so I know full well how atrocious FOSS can be for accessibility to blind users generally.
It's so easy for us to say "do what I do" without considering people's use-cases and constraints. Like at work, I use what work says I have to use.
-
We're up to five, boys!
@prism what kind of desperately confused and tragic person *defends* Microsoft? I swear to god no one uses it voluntarily, no one in the last 20 years woke up excited for a Microsoft update. We use it because we have to, not because any of their products in any way increase the net happiness or convenience in the world.

I'm more upset than I've been in a while.
Windows 11 sets the default documents folder to onedrive\documents. Anything that gets saved there gets backed up to one drive. This includes various save games, all my Reaper stuff, and various other odds and ends that I like to, you know, save.
To save disc space, OneDrive also defaults to files being online-only. They're not stored on your device, they're just listed there. So despite what they call it, this is in fact not a backup at all, because it doesn't create an extra copy. It is actually just transferring your most precious, irreplacible, personal files to Microsoft in the background, and trusting that nothing will happen. You can see where this is going, but just to underline the point with a bleeding fucking dagger, I did not ask for any of this, I just clicked save like I have done for the last twenty or so years of my life using Windows.
Since I don't care about and have never intentionally used onedrive, I signed out of it. Flash forward six months, the files that I thought were on my computer (because I can go see them there in the folder) are in fact gone from my hard drive, and also Onedrive nuked them from orbit.
Years of my life, gone without a trace. Thanks so much, Microsoft. Whoever came up with all those ideas probably got massive performance bonuses, because we're in the worst timeline.
Goodnight.
@prism @NormanDunbar Fook Microsoft

@Cadbury_Moose @adredish @jernej__s If they'd had on and offsite backups they would be protected from missile attack. Skill issue.

@wpeckham That was an impressive amount of words, none of which answered my question.
@prism Trust anyone you think is worthy, but cover your ass. (I thought I included that, but perhaps in fewer words, it will be more impactful.)

@wpeckham You're telling me, "don't use this thing over here," I'm telling you that I have no other choice, you're telling me OK I hear you but you should still use something else, without telling me what. You're saying nothing of value and its' obnoxious.

@prism Fuck OneDrive. Fuck it harshly with a rusty spike. Win11 doing this by default is a perfect example of the corporation/OS thinking it knows better than the user. Newsflash, no the actual hell it doesn't. God if I do eventually have to upgrade my other machine to win11 I'm not looking forward to that being a thing. Have never used OneDrive before, and what you've talked about here makes me want to do so even less.
@jdking92 it's not that they think they know better than the user, it's that they don't care because dark patterns make them more money. They have no interest in producing an enjoyable or even useable customer experience. They're only out to make money for themselves and the people who pay the bills are not the ones using the products for anything worthwhile. I hate Microsoft with a passion and I'm deeply sorry for people who have to use them.

@prism Indeed, I signed up for OneDrive, quickly realised it was a big mistake, so I killed it 2 days later. Not that the "big alternative" is much better.

@prism lost most of a novel this way. The people that designed it to work this way have names and addresses. I'm compiling a list.

@prism That sucks majorly, I'm so sorry.
Also I'm surprised to find out accessibility is so lacking on linux. You shouldn't have to rely on microsoft for that.

@prism I stumbled upon your post in my timeline and unfortunately I have nothing else to say then "well, fuck...¨

@prism yep, they've got enough captive users now that they can concentrate on squeezing them for metrics or whatever else: middle managers carving out their own turf without someone in control of the overall experience. Because they don't care about the experience. Mask off innit, they don't need to pretend to be interested in customers anymore. @jdking92
