Windows 11 sets the default documents folder to onedrive\documents. Anything that gets saved there gets backed up to one drive. This includes various save games, all my Reaper stuff, and various other odds and ends that I like to, you know, save.
To save disc space, OneDrive also defaults to files being online-only. They're not stored on your device, they're just listed there. So despite what they call it, this is in fact not a backup at all, because it doesn't create an extra copy. It is actually just transferring your most precious, irreplacible, personal files to Microsoft in the background, and trusting that nothing will happen. You can see where this is going, but just to underline the point with a bleeding fucking dagger, I did not ask for any of this, I just clicked save like I have done for the last twenty or so years of my life using Windows.
Since I don't care about and have never intentionally used onedrive, I signed out of it. Flash forward six months, the files that I thought were on my computer (because I can go see them there in the folder) are in fact gone from my hard drive, and also Onedrive nuked them from orbit.
Years of my life, gone without a trace. Thanks so much, Microsoft. Whoever came up with all those ideas probably got massive performance bonuses, because we're in the worst timeline.
Goodnight.
@prism That sucks majorly, I'm so sorry.
Also I'm surprised to find out accessibility is so lacking on linux. You shouldn't have to rely on microsoft for that.

@prism yep, they've got enough captive users now that they can concentrate on squeezing them for metrics or whatever else: middle managers carving out their own turf without someone in control of the overall experience. Because they don't care about the experience. Mask off innit, they don't need to pretend to be interested in customers anymore. @jdking92

@nicolas17 @jackf723 @librarysquirrel @altlazybear @prism Correct, also they don't sign you into iCloud automatically if you don't set up an Apple ID during Setup Assistant. You can then sign into the App Store separately later, and never have to touch iCloud at all if you don't want to. This has been how it's always worked. I Believe cloud activation is mainly for security reasons to ensure the OS is signed, though I agree it shouldn't be necessary.
@ZBennoui @nicolas17 @jackf723 @librarysquirrel @altlazybear @prism I have never ever signed in to iCloud on my work mac. I have installers for the OS on a separate HD. I also have an OS installation on a separate HD which I can plug in and select on boot to restore the OS.

@prism this is horrible. It is odd to see people's suggestions as especially they should understand this exact frustration when systems do things behind one's back or even generally when things happen behind your back that you cannot observe but affect you in a bad way.
A reason I feel uncomfortable using a smartphone is because there is a lot happening on such a device, but usually just a single thing is visible and it feels like a lack of insight and thus control.
Without eyesight it would seem extremely hard to reach a level of comfort, trusting computing in general. You are very brave that you reached this point. What happened now is betrayal.
Many people using free software were once betrayed by proprietary software, so I would expect empathy especially from that corner.
All the best wishes!! Everybody deserves computing they have full control over and that will not betray them. And damn that this is not available for all today!

@penrose Microsoft has quotas to meet and laws to comply with. Linux cares naught for these silly trifles, as long as the thing you made works for you and your cool friends then that's all it needs to do.

@prism Many sympathies. No solutions.
I'm still on Windows 10 and File Explorer no longer works. It tells me I must have spelled the file address wrong. I have decades of documents in folders. I can't access any of them.
This should be fixable but I'm also sick and lack the energy to even try.

@prism That really sucks, man. I wish they weren't so aggressive with this, as I think this would also effect backups, e.g., through robocopy mirroring. That, and free users only get 5GB, so it's not a viable backup strategy in the first place. They also don't make it easy to disable, and the moving from OneDrive to local folders was not frictionless from what I can recall in my Windows 11 install.

@prism i also had a similar story as you about a year ago or so. Onedrive. I had 2 accounts on one machine. After a terrible update, and without asking, it migrated all my files to the cloud. I didn’t have Onedrive installed or enabled on my account. Turns out the other user account on that machine that hadn’t been logged into in a long time had given Microsoft the right to access my files. So my account had its permissions overwritten by the other account that hadn’t not been logged into. My pc was uploading my files to the cloud without asking. It filled my free Onedrive account to max and caused me to lose a lot of personal data. All of that data was stolen. I haven’t had windows on anything since. I hope to never have to use it again…. I also my not have a choice in that either. So anyways. Sorry to hear of your loss stranger. These are dark, stupid times. I am using bazzite, popos, cachyos and macOS for art things. I am afraid that macOS is next on my chopping block. I might just have to sell it all and live in the woods. Dark times. Totally the worst timeline. It can either get worse or better. Right now it is worse. Change fortunately is inevitable.

@kimcrawley Yeah Linux in particular is a shit show where accessibility is concerned. So much for allyship. Oh well. Maybe they'll get their act together in twenty years or something but not holding my breath for it.
There is someone working on accessibility for #freebsd. Of course I don't remember who, but they are on Mastodon.

@prism It's a hard lesson to learn. But I wonder why you ever trusted MS to back up all your data rather than also having your own system.
