    @futurebird Hey, Larry Graham and Bootsy Collins are still alive!

    And Nile Rodgers (though I think he would be more disco than funk, but the borders are vague.)

      Funk is coming back. I repeat The Funk is Returning.

      I didn't really notice it, just seemed like a musical style or a reference, but so many songs have that funky sound now, and every little band has some guy with the saxophone or other brass instrument instead of just electric guitars.

      The thing about a funk band is there is *no upper limit* to the number of brass players you can add. The bands of the 70s just kept expanding in size until they were orchestras.

      Will it happen again?

        @futurebird hearing Lords of the Underground sing

        "But they don't understand how I feel about the funk
        I walk with the funk, I talk with the funk
        I eat with the funk, I sleep with the funk
        I live for the funk, I'll die for the funk"

        Was like being reborn. Learning about funk after that taught me so much, it's almost indescribable the effect it had on me, it was profound.

              @futurebird The upper limit is money. More players means a smaller split after a gig. Which is a shame, because even a medium sized brass section adds a lot to a performance.

                    @futurebird

                    oh i hope it happens. funk is still one of my favorite choices for how i get myself *out* of a funk. it's just hard to be a gloomy gus when you're blasting out a good funk tune.

                      @futurebird You're right. Funk is back.

                      I was thinking the other day of how pop had finished circling back to disco. It was obvious it's been on this trajectory for awhile. It was so slow and subtle that I really can't pinpoint when it crossed over. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that disco is back too, distinct from funk. But either way, somehow the 70s returned.
