Forsythia is named after William Forsyth (1737–1804), a Scottish botanist who was a royal head gardener and founding member of the Royal Horticultural Society. It is sometimes called the 'Easter tree' because it blooms at the right time of year. Ours has been putting on a grand show this spring.

@RickGaehl Interestingly, Forsythia flowers in New Zealand around Easter too, on the other end of the world. Down here Forsythia has a peak burst of flowering in Spring, before it leafs out, and then often has another smaller burst of flowering later in Autumn around Easter.

(It's planted here in gardens, and only sparingly wild, so far.)

Here are a couple of Forsythia I recently photographed flowering in gardens of Christchurch city, NZ.

@RickGaehl I remember hanging eggs on them in my childhood. Since climate change, they bloom much earlier than even an early Easter in Alsace. Only this year we have luck because the cold with minus degrees conserved them.

@oblomov @RickGaehl Probably some distant relative - my ancestors are from the same Forsyth clan (via Australia). But I don't know of any direct connection to any other famous Forsyths (Bruce, Frederick, the other Tom, etc).

@joncounts That's interesting. I haven't noticed any autumn flowering here, but we're a long way from its homeland.

@NatureMC That's a great custom, but did you also have the Easter Hare and an egg hunt in Alsace?

I don’t know…my mom told me it was simply a mispronunciation of “Forcynthia.”
