If Big Tech ever wants to bring down the free independent Fediverse, all they have to do is leak the private notes we pin to other people’s profiles.

@CiaraNi I assume you live in a world where you reevaluate decisions, or that sort of detailed log seems a little pointless
I just block and then go on with my day.But I almost never block, though. People don't interact with me in a negative way, most of the time.
@CarstenBoll @Tattooed_Mummy I was only joking about the sub-categories and long notes. Reply guys are so common in here that I have one-word codes for whichever variety they are. Not code as in 'secret', just a word that I know conveys the difference between one kind and the other.
"But I almost never block, though. People don't interact with me in a negative way, most of the time" - am happy that's your experience online!

@Badgardener Agreed. I would never assume that it is impossible for something private online to become not private. Whether by accident or malicious design.
I think we also assume that because we're in an internet backwater here, the big platforms are not bothering with us.
I put my fediverse account aside for a year, and don't use things like Google *except* for a work email address which is kept for Reasons but which gets almost no traffic.
Shortly before firing up the fediverse account again, I ventured onto Google and asked it about Badgardener. The wretched AI thing immediately gave a detailed breakdown of my preferences, activity etc.
This conversation is currently being stored in Google, whether you use Google or not...
I'm going out in the sunshine now.

"The only negative comments I’ve had about postng in Welsh have come from people who live in Wales."
That surprised me!

@CiaraNi it’s a very rare occurance (and much rarer here than in Other Places) but every now and then someone will explain that I’d get more engagement if I posted in English, or bilingually, as if I hadn’t worked that out for myself!

Well, I am sorry it's not everyone's experience.

@CarstenBoll @CiaraNi Good Lord I block at least one person a day

@CarstenBoll @Tattooed_Mummy It's not, sadly. Especially not for women, I dare say.

@CiaraNi ha ha now you reminded me I have a category "mansplainer"

@CiaraNi ha ha now you reminded me I have a category "mansplainer"
I am always vaguely worried that I am both a reply guy and a mansplainer
️ Maybe I have hundreds of notes written about me, who knows. -

@Tattooed_Mummy @CarstenBoll On the plus side, blocking can be quite liberating. The person disappears instantly from the universe, I find. Unless it was something especially egregious, I won't remember later that they existed. I assume it's the same for those who block me. Sometimes I meet someone who's blocked me when I can't see their one post in a thread of mutuals. I always feel happy for them. They got the peace they wanted!

@ygathgoch @CiaraNi I’ve had several hospital visits recently, and have started wearing one of those “I speak Welsh” badges. Some NHS staff have the symbol sewn into their clothes, or they wear a lanyard, so I’d assumed anyone who didn’t wasn’t a Welsh speaker, which I wrong about at least twice.

@nic @CiaraNi the assumption we're all here for engagement really annoys me. I once got a DM in response to a picture of a sunset saying I'd get more engagement if I used hashtags, and while it was well intentioned (if a bit mansplainer) under the assumption that my purpose here was to maximize engagement and publicize myself I guess, I'm really just here to drop random posts and pictures that made me happy into the conversation and if they make someone else happy that's the only metric of success I'm interested in realky

At one point, two nurses were discussing my thumb, in English: I’d been speaking Welsh to one, but assumed the other didn’t understand, so I switched to English. WRONG! They were both Welsh speakers, but the one I hadn’t seen before had assumed *I* wasn’t, so was speaking English to her colleague for *my* benefit.
We have a long way to go.

@Tattooed_Mummy It's a big tent, that Mansplainer category

I wish I could see the list of notes next to my blocklist, I'd imagine it would look something like
Mansplainer
Mansplainer
Mansplainer
Weird issue with vegans and cws for some reason
Mansplainer
Complete unhinged loon

@ygathgoch @nic Such a pity that some people have that attitude

@nic @ygathgoch That was considerate, but yes, I imagine it makes it more complicated to just naturally use the language in everyday situations.
