Can somebody please explain what the exact differences are among the Home, Local, and Federated feeds?

Can somebody please explain what the exact differences are among the Home, Local, and Federated feeds? And what determines whose posts show up in my timeline for each?
I see lots of posts from people I don’t follow on the local and federated feeds. It feels like there is an algorithm somewhere feeding me that content. Am I wrong? If so, then where is that stuff coming from?

@Tombersax @FediTips Has a great explainer on this, among many!

@Tombersax FWIW, I’m using the Mastodon app. Unless I’m mistaken, the “Following” feed shows you posts from everyone you follow, in real time; the “Local” feed shows you posts from everyone in the Forkiverse, in real time. Likewise with the “Lists” and “Followed Hashtags” options. Insofar as I’m aware, everything you’re seeing is being posted in real time. In other words, no algorithm.

@Tombersax Folks have sent you good links to explainers, but one way to understand the federated feed is like this: Forkiverse-ians *are* the algorithm.
As folks on Forkiverse follow other folks in the wider fediverse, incoming public posts from those followed get shared with everyone on Forkiverse via the federated feed. So, Forkiverse residents expand the overall incoming federation feed by discovering folks elsewhere.

There's no algorithm!
Home is all the posts from all the accounts you follow, all the posts shared by accounts you follow, and other people's posts that use hashtags you follow.
Local is all the public posts made by people on your server.
Federated is all the public posts made on your and other servers that your server has noticed.
