@stigcq Haha, I've noticed that with Rejsekort recently. I haven't used my Basiskort yet. It has just arrived by post, nicely in time for #DanmarkSkifter day. While they have both Rejsekort and Basiskort terminals at the same time, the Rejsekort terminals don't always work.

@CiaraNi Well the rejsekort app isnt US big tech, as far I am aware. Im no fan of it for other reasons though, simply dont want to have use my mobile phone for everything. And its tracking you like crazy.

@stigcq I've never used the app either.

I hope it’s within the spirit of the ’Denmark Switches from Big Tech’ campaign to say what I won't switch from. I will keep using cash and queuing up to pay while exchanging a few words with a fellow human. I will keep using cards, not apps, for public transport. I will keep using code generators to access state services. I pretend it’s to be ethical, but it’s really because I’m lazy. These are simpler to use and you don’t get locked out of them by updates or phone problems.

@CiaraNi oh interesting that the chip got MitID branding now! Here's mine I ordered on day 1 of MitID launch even though it would be months until I got MitID myself. (I happened to be working with the same technology at the time and could use another device for testing)

@CiaraNi I'm curious what the bottom symbol is on your chip where the battery charging symbol is on mine. Would you mind taking a closer up photo? Thanks in advance (and no worries if it's a bother and you don't want to!)

@reynir Nul problem! But it's just the same - it's the same battery symbol. I can see that I mindlessly blurred it out too when I was blurring out identifying information on the other stuff.

@reynir That is curious. I wonder why it wasn't mitID-branded from the start. I only got the chip last year when there was a push to remind people to have a mitID back-up. It took a bit of persuading for them to accept that I didn't want the app as a back-up, but another physical code generator. It cost a nominal fee, which is fair enough. It came all nicely nestled in to the black box, like jewellery 🙂

Interesting! I got mine in early 2025 (moved to Denmark late 2024) and was issued the black one at the bottom left in the OP picture.

I was told the battery should last 10 years and I can get it replaced once it runs out. I'm unsure if it will be free once it happens, but paying for 10 years of service sounds fair to me.

Yay to not depending on a phone to be a functional resident. 🙂

@samuel @reynir The black kodeviser is still the standard one they issue. A friend lost theirs and it was replaced for free at Borgerservice. Great service.

The white Chip version is, as far as I understood, intended for heavy log-on use. Like an accountant who has to verify with mitID multiple times a day. It's slightly quicker to use. I got it just as a back-up. Had to pay, but it was nominal, around 150 kr. if memory serves.

@CiaraNi yea, it's odd. Maybe they didn't get a deal in place early enough to get branded devices? So they had to buy unbranded stock?
From a technical point of view it should be possible to have multiple chips as backup, but as far as I understand it's a policy decision to not allow that. Blows my mind frankly.

@CiaraNi @samuel yes, the chip is slightly faster to use usually. It also has better security properties - it's more resistant against fishing due to how it works.

Another very cool thing about it is it works with other websites as a second factor authentication thingie! If they support the "WebAuthn" standard. That I think is a huge plus.

@reynir @samuel That is very interesting and useful to know. I just put mine in a drawer as a back-up. Perhaps I should use the chip instead and make the kodeviser the back-up. I didn't realise the chip had these extra advantages. Mange tak for informationen!

@CiaraNi @samuel you're welcome! I do find that it can be a bit finicky to get the chip working on the phone over NFC or bluetooth, so there it might actually be a bit slower. But on desktop/laptop it's a breeze (relatively).

@reynir I couldn't understand why it was an issue either. The Borgerservice staff were, as always, really helpful, but it was clear that their guidelines say 'app app app'. They kept assuming I just didn't know how to use a smartphone and patiently trying to explain to me how to use an app and update a phone. The request to have two physical code generators and no app was so unusual that they rang mitID HQ halfway through negotiations. We all got there in the end 🙂
