Bizarre: Data centres have a total of 15 GW (15,000 MW) in queue for electricity connections in the Netherlands, grid operators just disclosed.

Assuming that they would actually get to build those data centres and get the connections, the new data centres would (at 90% capacity factor) use around 120 TWh/year, as much as all companies and households together use now.

It would also mean that much of the massive ongoing grid expansion and renewables buildout would be just to feed the new data centres. Grid operators association Netbeheer Nederland is right to ask government for tough choices on how many data centres to allow to be built, and where.

Oh don’t worry next year it will be 10 times as much the total energy output of any nation along with 50 times water, Utes, all of which will be zero because magic

That's on the level of all of the chemical industry, if they would completely produce all their raw materials from scratch and move all their processing heating to electricity.

@Sustainable2050 And will they pay for the grid expansion?

@Sustainable2050 This is what has been happening in Ireland. All the new wind and solar gets swallowed up by data centre expansion.

Convert those data centres to battery parks after the demise of the ai spook. Those hefty connections will come in very handy!
