@hpod16 If you're looking for a cool interface to track things. https://fedideck.app.

@phillycodehound @iolaire looks cool! Reminds me a lot of what Tweetdeck used to be, which I used religiously back in 2017. Thanks for building this!

Here's my first Mastodon post!
My mission out here? To understand and promote Mastodon, the only large European social media platform (to my knowledge).
How can we make more Europeans come to the Fediverse?@hpod16 Welcome

How can we make more Europeans come to the Fediverse?@hpod16 Have more people talk about the Fediverse. Encourage (and teach) members of parliament(s) to move their social media from proprietary (and toxic) platforms to Mastodon or other Fediverse applications.
Stop promoting X, facebook etc. on the EC website, or at least don't prioritise them (see image). Make a conscious push in the right direction. You have agency, use it instead of staying passive and claiming "but that's where the users are". -

It’s good people are paying attention to the order of icons on our websites.
can’t say much more about that right now, except keep checking this -

DeepL is probably my favourite machine translation service, also, it's European!@hpod16 @alex_p_roe @FediTips Night and day levels of improvement over Google Translate for European Portuguese, that's for sure -
Here's my first Mastodon post!
My mission out here? To understand and promote Mastodon, the only large European social media platform (to my knowledge).
How can we make more Europeans come to the Fediverse?@hpod16 Social and economic investments into:
* Spreading the good word about it (it's like if old school Twitter worked like Email)
* Informing the general public about how to best use it
* Find means of utilizing its modularity (I'm not even on Mastodon at all, I'm on Pleroma...yet we are still talking)
* Invest in BIG, SAFE, semi-vetted instances...
and that is going to be the hardship I'd say. What actor would want to do that out of good will? Social media post-advent-of-facebook lived on this immense VC funding and the cultural explosion it brought, they then ensh*ttified their services and cranked up the data gathering to try to turn a sustainable profit or to gain further funding to sustain themselves... How would we keep places safe for everyone, especially younger adults while also not infringing on anyones freedom of speech or expression. Would EU-backed initiatives allow LGBTQ voices to do more than advocate...as in socialize...as in...allowing sexualized language at all? Remember that if EU-money goes to it...it will be publically scrutinized too... so it's a tightrope, for sure... hard nut to crack. -

How can we make more Europeans come to the Fediverse?@hpod16 I'm a relatively recent joiner, and put it off for several years, because I didn't know how to pick a server. Or what was involved really in picking a server.
I don't know what a solution to that might be. But anything that can be done which eases the transition from: "oh, mastodon, what's that?", to being three days in to having an account, is something that should be done.
I wonder how many people thought it sounded interesting, clicked on a link or two, then clicked away when they saw they'd to figure something out before starting.

Thanks for the screenshot!
Something else to look into
Europeans are proud of our many languages, but I have to say not every community manager in the EU social teams can speak all 24 EU languages.
Machine translation like this can come in real handy.
@hpod16
Accept Esperanto as an official language for all EU-Members, so that official documents could *only* get published in Esperanto and the member states themselves could translate them in their languages.
I know that there are organizations working actively on Esperanto being recognized as an official EU-language - and I like it

Hi Hannah, welcome!
About your question, Mastodon is part of a much larger social network called the Fediverse.
I've done an easy-to-understand guide about this at https://fedi.tips/what-is-mastodon-what-is-the-fediverse/
There are also lots more guides on the front page at https://fedi.tips and feel free to ask if you want help with anything specific. I am trying to provide unofficial tech support on here
@hpod16
Important - imho - is to not *only* promote Mastodon exclusively!
In the answers to your post there was a hint on "channels".
Actually, there is fediverse software, which let you create separate channels for different topics one wants to publish about.
Followers can follow a channel without having to have to follow one's "main account".
Sharkey, Friendica and HubZilla would be the the softwares I know of (plus PeerTube for video channels).
Besides, they offer *much* higher character limits, like 3.000 / 5.000 / 10.000 chars, more poll options (than just Mastodon's 4), more pictures (than just Mastodon's 4), much more functionality all over.
I think that could be highly convenient for any EU-member - organization or natural person - to use *instead* of Mastodon.

@alex_p_roe @FediTips@fasnix @hpod16 @FediTips Hmm, Esperanto, for some reason, has never gained any real traction. It's a nice idea but Europe would need to start teaching the language in schools then there's the world's lingua franca: English which is already being taught widely even if it is not the easiest language to learn well. In short, there’s not much hope for Esperanto IMO.

@hpod16 @HennaVirkkunen Yes, a very good start, even though the instance name is a bit clunky and bureaucratic.

@kallekn @hpod16 @HennaVirkkunen
I suggest 'EU.4u' as instance name.

How can we make more Europeans come to the Fediverse?@hpod16 It's possible, but there are not enough resources. I've been talking with officials in two gminas (lowest level administrative units) for almost two years. They see no real advantages – most of the communication with citizens is via facebook – and administrators do not understand that many of their posts are not displayed. Changing this would require an organization to kickstart Mastodon in gminas – by setting up Mastodon accounts for the administration, but also convincing and helping citizens to set up their own accounts. In my sparsely populated area probably even one person could do the job – full time. The few people here interested in more effective communication lack the time do do this on a volunteer basis, but would be eager to help in their free time. Perhaps I should write a few pages on this, but I really don't have that much time right now
