    I published some shareware in 1988. When I visited my parents last week they gave me an envelope addressed to me. It contained a postal order for the amount requested on the shareware. I've framed the postal order and hung it above my desk.

    @fesshole

    For reasons (I did similar at about the same time), this makes me very happy!

        Also, in case you're unfamiliar with it, a postal order (money order in the U.S.) is a way of sending money without using a bank check.

        You give the clerk the money you want to send, they create the money/postal order, you mail it with your order. It was very useful if you didn't have a bank account or if you wanted to send an international order.

          @fesshole Who cares what shareware was, I'm more concerned that fessor hadn't visited his parents since the eighties.

          @dshan @fesshole Maybe the thought of having to go through ~40 years of mail was keeping him from stopping by?

                @Flawgren @fesshole I think it's just one of those things that's so niche it may as well be a fess.

                Or just a regular old post on Fedi, to be honest.

                  I used to iron paper money or get new notes so I could mail it without it feeling too much like money.

                  I got acknowledgments, so I know it usually got there.

                  @clew @rivets @fesshole

                  Used a money order once.
                  Even had a cheque book. I think I only ever wrote about 3 cheques.

                  But BBS fees and Internet fees, I would just double envelope it and send it off. ISP I would send 6 months of fees at once.

                  Then ISPs started taking direct deposits.

                    @jgamble @Flawgren @fesshole Since I work with homeless people, I see these vouchers often. The government uses them to send money to people who don’t have a bank account or whose accounts have been frozen by a debt collector. Which is most of them. Since the vouchers are pink, I call the 15th of the month “Pink Day.”
