@niccolo That's fair, yeah. I personally find it a little annoying that newsletters became the norm, given that e-mail really works best as an interpersonal thing and not for broadcast, but still. Definitely splitting hairs at that point.
@xgranade in my bubble, everyone is on social media and basically nobody uses newsletters. I wish it was the norm to complain about it and push people towards RSS!

@xgranade As a part of my due diligence as "owner of a nightclub" one of the questions I often ask is, "what are other venues up to these days?" In order to answer that question, I wanted to assemble a calendar listing with all of the events happening at my town's other venues with capacities of our size or smaller.
Surely they all provide ICS or RSS feeds. Surely.
Ho ho ho, I had to write 2k+ lines of code, with custom scrapers for 112 web sites.

We have a project website. No accounts. No commenting. No cookies. No GDPR-relevant data storage. Soon a special RSS feed.
_Exactly_ because of this tendency towards apps, newsletters, feeds (or maybe because I was WWW-socialised in late 1993...).

@lobingera I don't really agree; so much of what I see is people bending over backwards working around whatever patterns some corporate middle manager thinks is good for engagement.
There's a lot of invisible effort that goes into making corporate social media do anything even remotely useful as an outreach tool.
Hard agree, having done stuff in a research group doing routine insta posts. It's a grind, with few tangible results and the ever present risk of being stuck at a nazi bar. An institution hosted blog would have been /would be far better - for both comms reach and building a useful institutional record.

@xgranade Too salty? Needs a dash more, in fact: Don't just make websites, but use plain, static HTML if possible. Pages that load fast and can be restyled on the client, without all the framework bloat.

@xgranade Maybe even without cookies and especially cookie banners (you can make websites without cookies which require acceptance, just use functional ones and no others. If you need them at all.)

... from around here (i'm loosely connected to research projects) the expectation is to have public info "visible" in "established social media" and this is an (imho) result of "search engines have degraded ..."

@xgranade squarespace is at least resulting in a website. Probably one that is prettier than functional, but at least it is a website that is not behind a login wall.
