So I have written about putting datacenters into low Earth orbit and it's a great idea!

@quinn It reads like parody is the thing about these proposals. They're on par with some of the best writing in the genre alongside Freeman Dyson's original Dyson sphere paper (which when one actually reads it, one finds he even asserts that the only kind of people who could get to space are space Nazis, and they will build a Dyson sphere because of course what they want most in the universe is more land to conquer).
I think my favorite part is the notion that you really don't need to worry about the radiation problem, because bit errors are just another kind of non-linear function, baby!!!!!!!

@quinn How are we supposed to provide power to a datacenter that is in the outer space? Elon wants to pull a milion kilometers long copper cable? This stuff is straight up bullshit.

@shadowrocket227 solar panels, sooo many solar panels, but the bigger problem than that is radiating the heat away.

@quinn Thank you that was a nice read.
Why did you not talk about the magnetosphere? Is low orbit protected also?

@shadowrocket227 @quinn
Power is easy.
Getting rid of all the heat (= power consumed) nearly impossible.
Reliability / life
Servicing
Launch costs
Launch pollution
re-entry pollution
Light pollution on Earth from the huge solar panels.Solar power + batteries on Earth is cheaper.
Of course the FCC & FAA are useless regulators, so no regulation compared to Earth. -

how about clock ticks? relatavistic effects on timekeeping? -

@quinn
Yes, even 50nm GPUS and RAM won't work in space without shielding. -
