Can some Finn please explain this road sign seen in Kemijärvi earlier?

Is it "you will only hit elk on the roads in half of Finland"? Is there some elk wall across the middle of the country?

EDIT: OK, it's a reindeer herding area

    But I have questions!

The antlers on that sign are wrong.

And given I was a LONG way into the area, why do I need the map?

@jon It shows where reindeers are herded. I guess the regulations related to collision with a reindeer are different in that area or something? And maybe means ”we won’t bother putting up separate warning signs all over the place, you just have to be aware”

@jon Do you have access to Galileo? Maybe that works - and is our own European system to boot!

        @jon

        Reindeer herding area.

Of course the wikipedia article is only in Finnish: https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poronhoitoalue.

But the text for the main picture is German.
"Die Grenze des finnischen Rentierzuchtgebiets beginnt an der Gemeindegrenze von Kuhmo und Suomussalmi."

@jon I think this marks the southern boundary of the area where reindeer flocks are tended: https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poronhoitoalue

@jon But you might have arrived with your car on the train, and not actually driven over the boundary.

@jon Good question (and I suppose then it is not just the southern boundary)…

(The Finnish road sign thing that I always get confused by is the ”yleisrajoitus” [general speed limit] annotation on 80 km/h signs on single carriageway roads when leaving slower areas. I mean, of course 80 km/h is the general speed limit, so why the extra annotation? If it were for foreigners, why is it only in Finnish/Swedish? I learned to drive in Finland so I remember learning about the sign you posted, but not about the ’yleisrajoitus’ annotation.)

I guess it's just a reminder because deer/elk/moose warnings in the south are just for some road sections and reindeer warning is for the whole area.

@sebwilken @jon Male reindeer can be pretty impressive size, too. Wouldn’t want to run into a such in a small car. At the very least those antlers will spoil the surface finish, I think.

This one is in middle Sweden, though. Maybe they are smaller in Lapland.

@jon I don't really know why it's this way. In the south you just get regular warning signs with moose or deer, maybe it's to make the difference clear (and the fact that the danger doesn't stop after a couple of km.)

Reindeer, being half tame behave quite differently than moose. They might decide to not be scared of a car at all.

@jon Some trains (for me, often TGVs) just block GPS - the signal just doesn't make it through whatever coating there is on their windows

There's being so far north that the number of satellites above the horizon is low, which means fewer with strong signals, which means train infrastructure may leave too few for your phone to do the 3D geometric calculations properly

And then there's WiFi assisted GPS, which sees your train WiFi and goes "Oh, that network ID? Forget satellites, Stockholm!"
