    If your first reaction to a positive development is to start listing why it's not enough, I'll block you.

    The development probably came about through the concerted, intelligent efforts of a lot of people.

    You're telling them their efforts do not matter.

    More work needs doing. We all know that. Keep you allies standing to do the work. Appreciate what they have done and what they are doing.

    @SuneAuken

    THIS! SO MUCH THIS!

    There are few things as rage inducing as when you do your absolute best to improve the world in whatever small way, you as a single human can change anything, just to have someone scold you for not fixing the entire problem yourself, and telling you that your personal contribution will not matter one bit anyway. I simply hate that.

      @madsenandersc

      I take people who do that to be concern trolls. They are there to get you down. Whether for political purposes or because they are themselves deluded, I don't really care.

      I sometimes try to reason with them. I've never seen it work.

      So it's #ShrugAndBlock now.

          Case in point indeed.

          The replies to every announcement from the EU commision is like that. They do something reasonable and get drowned in concern trolling.

            I know I shouldn't, but I couldn't help myself. Like you said, they almost certainly can't be reasoned with, but I had to leave a comment on that thread anyway.

              No, this is fine. You don't engage any individual troll; you simply point out the problem and support the initiative.

                @SuneAuken @madsenandersc I've noticed that too. A deluge of negative, nitpicking, moaning, concern trolling, unconstructive replies to every single EU post. I respect the fact that they are here in the Fediverse at all, unlike most official institutions, and that they are trying to do positive things.

                  @CiaraNi @madsenandersc

                  Exactly. It is deeply exasperating.

                  But, then again, exasperation is the precise point of concern trolling. Many of the nitpickers are literally there to make sure that nobody else comes around and that any reach a beneficial message might have is diminished as much as possible.

                    @SuneAuken @madsenandersc Yes indeed. They're exasperating and, if we let them, energy-draining. And they offer nothing constructive. #ShrugAndBlock is indeed the way to go.

                        @SuneAuken Why do people do this?

                        It goes beyond this. It's a whole way of thinking that is so hideously toxic that I'd go so far as to call it potentially deadly.

                        "Don't fix this thing, that's more important." Or worse "don't fix this thing because it would interrupt my workflow."

                        I've seen in applied to almost any sort of progress. Politically it has deadly results. x isn't good enough, thus let y make things worse instead. And for tech too! "Humans shouldn't leave Earth until they fix ourselves on Earth first" is a big one I see a lot. As if we'll ever fix ourselves...

                        There will always be something else that needs fixing. It's a system with built in automatically moving goalpoasts they don't have to manually move. Thus progress is shut down thanks to them.

                          @SuneAuken @madsenandersc Well, since I know a little bit about some decisions that happen in the EC, I can tell you that both is true, and that might be the hardest thing to understand.

                            @SuneAuken @madsenandersc ... interpretation of the problem.

                            So maybe stow that "concern troll" framing, and consider that it's could be people on the other side of that gap venting their actually well founded frustrations.

                            I've known members of the EC trying hard to close that gap, and continuing to fail, albeit less so. That is appreciated as well, and people generally express that, too.

                            Consider also that "more work is needed" means "more time is needed", and when you're affected by...
