    @lelehier @EUCommission Not afraid of choice. People try to explain why Apple refuses to offer the choice. They implemented their own AI features in a way that they can’t ever access your data. If they open those APIs up to other vendors, they provide them with full access to nearly all data on your device. Apple can’t control what those vendors do with that data. They could easily offer the choice, but how would they warn an average user about what that would mean for access to their data?

      @phillip @rzeta0 @EUCommission they absolutely are.

      I HATE how Apple is managing the App Store, it’s the most greedy-corporate asshole thing they do.

      Just because I’m defending apple against the EU on the DMA means they’re doing things right in other aspects. Don’t get me wrong.

      The difference I see here is that apple is a private company, does not need to have a free market marketplace if they don’t want to. It’s wrong and stupid, but it’s their choice to do so.

      @webjac @phillip @rzeta0 @EUCommission It a weird reasoning to say it's a free market so private companies can elect to lock it in every way they see fit. The way I see it is that it's not only a free OS market but also a free browser market, a free office software market, etc. That is what the EU is trying to protect. That being said Apple is able to provide this smooth experience for its users because it can control every aspects of it, so I also can understand their frustration with the EU.

        @webjac @rzeta0 @Ombligoelemento @EUCommission I hate this statement "vote with your wallet". That was never an option. Wanna have low-sugar soft drinks? Have fun to vote for them with your wallet while the supermarket offers you hundreds of brands that *all* have basically the same ingredients. Wanna have a smartphone device that allows you to choose every software running on it yourself? Have fun finding one, as all big brands from Android to iphone force you zo use their app store.

          @webjac @rzeta0 @Ombligoelemento @EUCommission It's an illusion that the consumer has anything to say here. As soon as the market is concentrated enough into a few companies they tell the consumer what he wants to buy and not the other way around.

          In the end you don't vote with your wallet but will your Ballot, e.g. at the next election of the European parliament.

            > Why didn’t Apple try harder?

            Same reason they complained when they got forced to use USB-C... and had fanboys complaining on the internet that lightning cable is better because X and Y.

            And then they switched to USB-C.

            Yup. Apple, like all major US tech firms, think they can just get around EU regulations. It's incredibly arrogant and I'm very glad when the EU puts a stop to it, no matter the minor inconvenience (and that's all it is). Apple et al are counting on people complaining about their new shiny thing to put pressure on the EU. Don't buy into their manipulation.

              @EUCommission this seems like a you problem. Maybe down the road they’ll make the feature modular they have already done so for other agent choices like XCode.

                    @Paul_Harts, you got it backwards.

                    You must first be given an option to choose, before you can decide to choose Apple/Google's walled garden.

                    Just to make it even clearer: If you're not given the possibility to choose, you cannot choose. You are forced.

                    If EU doesn't have such hard requirements, Apple (and other BigTech companies) will never ever do anything else than what pleases them alone.

                    By the way,, Europe do provide several sovereign European alternatives to iCloud as well. But it won't necessarily be too easy with iPhones, because Apple doesn't believe in giving their users freedom to choose for themselves.

                    Apple is the the guardian of paternalistic nonsense.

                      @kaidu @webjac @rzeta0 @Ombligoelemento @EUCommission I wonder how 'vote with your wallet' looks like in practise. Do you go back in time and not get an iPhone because Apple wants to force feed you their AI assistant? Or do you just throw away your iPhone, replace it with a phone of another brand, and then replace your Macbook, and spend forever migrating away from iCloud?

                      'Vote with your wallet' when you're in the Apple ecosystem comes with sacrifice, something the EU is fighting against.

                          @EUCommission I’m usually a fan of European regulations, but in this case, I find the Commission’s reasoning questionable.

                          Apple runs the AI models either locally on the device or in a specially secured cloud environment. For both, Apple guarantees that no one except the user has access to the processed data. The effort involved in operating the private cloud compute is enormous and well-documented.

                          In return, the AI then gains comprehensive access to user data.

                            @EUCommission As far as I know, Gemini as used by Apple is subject to precisely these restrictions in order to ensure data privacy. (https://security.apple.com/blog/expanding-pcc/)

                            If you now replace this secure AI environment with any other cloud provider, these guarantees disappear entirely. If Apple were to make the same APIs available to other AI models as it does to Gemini in the secure environment, users' data would be completely unprotected.

                              @EUCommission You should take a look at who supports this EU regulation. In this case, it’s anyone who wants full access to Apple users’ data.

                              And yes, Apple likes to use these arguments to shut out the competition. But in this case, things are a bit more complicated.

                                    @Ilka4You @EUCommission No, it’s not. For the past decade, Apple’s features alone were perfectly fine, and we never needed any third parties involved in the core functions. They should just leave it that way. Forcing this change is as absurd as requiring car manufacturers to let you swap engines from other brands, just because we’re in the EU and supposedly must have the option to choose which engine we want in our car. How stupid that would be?

                                    I don't know if you're old enough, but do you remember when Safari was the only browser available in Apple's products?

                                    Was your user experience better when you couldn't choose to use Chrome, Firefox or any other browser?

                                      @webjac @rzeta0 @Ombligoelemento @EUCommission It's an illusion that the consumer has anything to say here. As soon as the market is concentrated enough into a few companies they tell the consumer what he wants to buy and not the other way around.

                                      In the end you don't vote with your wallet but will your Ballot, e.g. at the next election of the European parliament.

                                      @kaidu @rzeta0 @Ombligoelemento @EUCommission I admit in markets so concentrated is really hard to vote with your wallet. But you still can. I don’t plan on buy an iPhone until the choice of models is released. I also plan to vote on the European Parliament next opportunity.

                                        @EUCommission I just find it amazing how different everyone’s take on this is. Apple says the EU is to blame for Siri AI not launching here, while you guys say it’s entirely Apple’s fault. Let’s be honest, the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. I also think it’s good that we don’t just rubber-stamp solutions from tech giants like Apple as if there were no risks involved. However, I do wonder: Why didn’t Apple try harder? Apple has been stringing us along since 2024, promising that the AI features would come. In all that time, surely it should have been possible to find a constructive solution for everyone.

                                        @tonio @EUCommission Apple has always been about vendor lock-in. Whether you believe it's because they insist on quality or because they can charge high prices because Apple products only work with Apple products, the fact remains that their brand was never about interoperability and choice, and that clashes with EU law.

                                          @EUCommission You should take a look at who supports this EU regulation. In this case, it’s anyone who wants full access to Apple users’ data.

                                          And yes, Apple likes to use these arguments to shut out the competition. But in this case, things are a bit more complicated.

                                          @EUCommission Addendum: It is highly doubtful whether Apple is capable of securely operating Apple Intelligence even within its own secure environment (on-device or in the Private Compute Cloud environment). The potential for attacks on the language models via the processed data is extensive.
