I woke up to realise something.
There is an assumption that, with the fall of the Berlin wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union, the West won the cold war.
The human mind looks for finality. But the world keeps turning.
Russia has won the cold war without firing a bullet. The US elected Donald Trump twice.

@Remittancegirl "Russia has won the cold war without firing a bullet...."
Fortunately, the world keeps turning, despite the idea of finality.
Putin has "won", and is actively losing, the Cold War.

@Remittancegirl "You're walking.
And you don't always realize it, but you're always falling.
With each step you fall forward slightly.
And then catch yourself from falling.
Over and over, you're falling.
And then catching yourself from falling.
And this is how you can be walking and falling at the same time."

Indeed. But the world keeps turning. In three weeks we can begin to write the next chapter.

It's an odd one because "the west" is, outside of that particular moment in history, ill-defined.
Like, when the USSR fell apart, did Russia become part of "the west"? Donald Trump was alive in the US during the late cold war, and he's certainly pro-capitalism; is he part of "the west"? Are fascism and colonialism inherent to "the west" or are they something other? When Pete Hegseth describes himself as the greatest protector of "the west", is he even talking about the same concept? Ten different people who consider themselves part of "the west" will give ten different answers.
This is not to put pressure on you to answer, of course. It's more that the term is ill-defined enough that we end up needing recourse to philosophy about thought and language.

Help us, Jacques Derrida, you're our only hope.

@Remittancegirl is it like rope pulling? When one side gives up (collapsing), the other side will fall as a result...

@Remittancegirl
I've thought this myself for quite some time. We look for beginnings and ends, punctuation marks in the timeline, but history plays out on a continuum and as long as the underlying patterns are extant, the same things happen again and again. -
