Ich bin bei rankett.net - angefangen habe ich mit Orgelvideos, inzwischen habe ich einen zweiten Kanäl mit allem möglichen anderen. Sehr zufrieden bisher. -

Davon hängt nämlich ab, was für Empfehlungen wir geben können@ErikDerBezwinger @andijah @SunDancer im Moment baue ich meine Website auf. ich mach einen Blog in Text und Videoform. dh zum einen will ich Videos auf meiner Website einbetten. im Moment ist das mal experimentell, aber wenn ich da einen Groove finde soll es professionell mich und meine Arbeit repräsentieren. ich kann noch nicht 100% sagen ob ich das eher in die kreative Richtung oder Promo bewege. Aber sowas. Blog/Video Essay/Case Studies. ist die Info hilfreich?

@chuls @andijah Ich wusel auf https://makertube.net/ herum. Ist bereits mein 3. PeerTube Versuch aber bisher auch der erfolgreichste. Nicht zuletzt weil die Datenlimits bei MakerTube deutlich entspannter sind als sonstwo.
Uploads sind noch viel Handarbeit (besonders bei den Hashtags könnte noch was verbessert werden) aber ansonsten läuft es eigentlich.

Klingt ein wenig wie meine Gedanken letztes Jahr. Ich habe mich dann für eine eigene Instanz entschieden, weil ich auch die Technik dahinter spannend finde. Aber das ist nicht für alle etwas und kostet Geld.Wenn du zunächst alles ausprobieren willst, dann meld dich erstmal an und schau einfach mal.
Was gerne vergessen wird (kein Vorwurf!): Videohosting kostet tatsächlich Geld, weil performanter Speicherplatz in Videogrößen nicht kostenfrei ist. Viele Instanzen sind daher auf Spenden/Mitgliedsbeiträge angewiesen. -

I'm researching where to start. some first person feedback from people actually uploading videos to a peertube platform?I'm in the process of creating more of my own stuff and trying to figure out what makes sense to use and for what. I work with YouTube creators, it's kinda my daily bread.
I'm looking at everything PeerTube atm and it all seems a bit clunky and tbh a little impractical? happy to change my mind though.
@chuls I've tried using other people's instances in the past but have found that to be unreliable — random removal of videos without communication, instances suddenly deciding to close. The technology itself seems sound. I think if you want to use it professionally it might be best to host it yourself or find a relatively low cost provider to host an instance for you (I think one or two of the big fediverse hosting providers that run Mastodon instances for people do PeerTube as well).

@chuls I don't find it particularly easier or harder than YouTube, but I'm only doing simple stuff in either case.

@chuls Just had a quick look at options. It looks like Fedihost (https://fedihost.co/pricing) offer managed PeerTube hosting from $6.99 monthly. Elestio (https://elest.io/open-source/peertube) start at $14 monthly and look a bit more customizable but also a bit more technically demanding. There were one or two others but these looked like the strongest bets.
It'd be worth asking around to see if anyone would recommend either of these providers for PeerTube, or any others I've missed.

@chuls I've been uploading videos to peertube for a year or two now. What do you want to know?
I don't find it clunky and impractical, but I also do not see it as my duty to convince you it is not, so not sure what you're after here.
Little experience with youtube, but that I found clunky and impractical. Nowadays, I don't bother with youtube at all. I don't watch youtube, I don't upload to youtube. I find youtube a bit creepy. If it's not on peertube, I'm not watching it.

@chuls I use it as a backup, because I'm trying to move away from Big Tech in general. I can't comment on the views or engagement, I don't do statistically significant numbers on either platform. I don't find it particularly clunky, though processing uploads takes a while because it's running on CPU.

@chuls @woe2you I have a peertube channel where I publish videos on a regular basis and then I have a few personal channels as well that I publish irregularly on. I do host my own, but I don't do anything fancy with it.
If I look at some of the more well established youtube channels that have a presence on peertube it seems they're getting a lot less views and engagement compared to the evil platform.
I'm seeing more views than I expected when I started vlogging on peertube but I wasn't expecting much to begin with
If you want to make money with your videos then I'm not sure peertube is for you. I believe there's some experiments with monetisation, but peertube is not really a capitalist platform with algorithms and ads and creepy tracking and all that crap.
I've only recently started vlogging and made a conscious choice to only do so on peertube, because I believe peertube provides a future I want to see. Youtube does not. That's the most important thing for me, not engagement and views. You may have different considerations.

@peter_ringholm do you perhaps have any experience to share here? I know you run both YouTube and PeerTube in parallel.
