More in the thread.The jay was great, first time I've seen one up close and it was very curious and unafraid - those pics are uncropped, it was a few feet away from me

The kingfishers stayed very far away so not great pics, but I did manage to get two in one shot
There were three there at one point too. -

@helenmclaughlinart thank you! I have sooo many shots of the jay, it kept hanging around us right by the hide where all the people were, not shy at all

@welshpixie Wonderful! I've never seen one IRL either, or kingfishers - sounds like it was a great day.
@helenmclaughlinart I hear jays loads around here but usually only see them as flashes when they're flying between trees. Easily confused with wood pigeons too from a distance.

There were three there at one point too.Tips for kingfisher spotting in the UK:
You need some still or slow-moving water that's deep enough for them to dive into, with tree or bush cover nearby, and ideally some perches over the water like sticks or reeds sticking up.
Duck ponds, lakes, canals, and the bits where rivers get slow and deep are great.
You're more likely to see them on partly sunny days, specifically when the clouds part and the sun comes out, as that's when the fish will swim up to catch bugs on the surface.

@welshpixie lovely shots! I’ve only ever seen evidence of jays here, not been lucky enough to spot one yet!

@welshpixie A trick I learned from famous Dutch naturalist Jac P Thijsse (1865-1945): when looking for kingfishers, look for their reflection in the water. Because there you can see their bright orange breast.
