Jenny Wren is such a crazy good reference track for subtle vocals, but those hard panned guitars wow!

The funny thing with mixing is, that non of the really great reference tracks follows any kinds of “classic rules”.
Check out Beyoncés Partition (remember sub, that’s the fun part), no snare in the center in the first half of the track. Hard panned. First half has nothing but bass and lead vocal in the center. Listen on headphones and notice how much space there is for the vocals.

Some of the more normal reference tracks I have (of acoustic music) is actually my own debutalbum. And it’s not because it’s my music, it’s because I was so extremely lucky to work with Swedish sound engineer Åke Linton in a really good studio.
We recorded live in Bohus Sound Studios in Göteborg with a jazz trio (piano, drums, bass) + me as a jazzy singer songwriter. They has an amazing Neve desk and all the analog gear you could dream of. With did use the computer as a tape-recorder though.

It was extremely inspiring working with Åke (former sound engineer for Esbjørn Svensson Trio).
He has setup everything when we arrived, the Grand was newly tuned and no mic was old awesome and well selected.
Day 1: Åke would mix on the desk / hardware while we recorded everything, so he had a base mix.
Day 2: Åke would mix each recording and do a live mix down when ready. No automation, all Åke riding the faders while the music was bounced. One track at the time.Mind blowing!

This was really the proof that a well equiped studio with an experienced engineer can do something we as solo producers will never be able to.
This will always be one of the highlights of my career, and since there is fewer and fewer of these studios around, I know this might be the only time I had this unique experiences.
Not that the other albums has been bad, this experience with Åke recording and live-mixing a bounce was just - well out of this world.

A little side story: My fathers brother was creating speakers for a long period, and used my album as his test-album.
I was once asked to visit one of the companies and do a live concert, so they could do an A/B test of me in real life and their speakers

And oh, totally forgot how extremely great Anders Perssons piano solo is in Solen Blir’ Så Rød!

Torben Bjørnskov also has a really great bass solo on the blues.
