We brought together top experts for our new Special Panel on child safety online.
We are looking into real solutions, like harmonised age limits for social media across all EU countries , and making sure tech platforms step up to protect young minds.
We are here to help make the internet a safer playground.

@EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu Please look into not doing mass surveillance instead

@EUCommission Setting the age limit too high (like 16) may endanger teens who are, for instance, queer without support from home. You're cutting them off from their only lifeline.
@irina @EUCommission Also it's IMO gross violation of freedom of speech, freedom of association.
It is my opinion that the hypocritical mask of the West slipped and the true, contemptible, authoritarian, totalitarian nature of the so called Western alleged democracies is revealed.

@EUCommission Digital age verification is one of the biggest privacy violations in the history of mankind. Stop this! We can take care of our children ourselves!

@EUCommission
As a parent I have found that the best way to protect my kids is not to block everything that is bad, because that is an impossible task. Instead, I teach them to recognize bad behavior and intentionally choose to look for good behavior. I teach them that I am always open for questions and there is nothing they could do that would prevent me from helping them. -

@EUCommission I disagree with this. I think this leads more towards mass surveillance than any good for kids.
If some parents are afraid of social networks, they have many options to prevent kids from using them. -

@EUCommission Protecting kids online is important. The way you want to do this does not ensure their safety and actaully put safety of others more in danger. Stop implementing the easy way out (forcing technical censorship) and start working on the right way to do this (education for parents and children on how to act online and what to do when something bad happens).

@lexinova @EUCommission not only check everyone, but permanently surveil everyone. Chat Control 3.0, the "Think of the Children" remix.

@EUCommission Have you considered just banning Facebook/Instagram and Twitter? Would solve like 99% of the problem.
Stop coddling these tech giants. Why do they get special treatment no other EH citizen gets? It's infuriating.

@EUCommission those children will grow up into the horrible world that you help build with surveillance, that or the fire in their eyes will go out and you will deserve any and all destruction

@celeduc @EUCommission for me it's a coordinated surveillance attack by the US
the fact that every country do this crap at the same time and so fast is proof it was coordinated.

@EUCommission you're falling over your feet spending enormous time and money trying to clean up the fallout of social media giants who refuse to implement proper, at scale, human-led, morally and ethically sound moderation, instead of shutting them down for refusing to implement that moderation (or realising they're far too big to do that, and downscaling appropriately). Prevention is better than cure.

because to verify you are a child you must check everyone.
@lexinova @EUCommission And to keep tabs of that, identifying data must be kept, making everyone (yes, children too) into immediate targets for stalking, extortion, targeted attack, etc.
Plan excellent. If you’re Sauron, or Putin, or somesuch.

@EUCommission Back up. Before going all "Will somebody think of the children", let's mandate that digital corporations have no more leeway to harming ANYONE, adults included, than is allowed in the non-digital world.
With proper safety & privacy regulations on digital services half the child endangerment - if not more - disappears right away.
