The rules are the same in Ontario, have been for a long time. It's stupid and annoying and another reason to keep one's surname after marrying ..unfortunately when your mom was married it was unheard of to keep one's maiden name.
@TrueNorthSpice Oh, and I hear you about not changing your name. I never did and don't regret it, but for those women who choose to do so, it shouldn't put their democratic rights at risk.

These new rules are going to confuse a lot of people. She needs photo ID to access her online healthcare info. If you are contacting another province for birth or marriage certificates, that will take time.
*Voting in the upcoming referendum does not require a govt-issued ID. There are other options. Phew!
Luckily for my mom, after searching through an old trunk, we found the original marriage certificate.

After I moved to Ontario I had to send to BC for a copy of my first marriage certificate in order to get photo ID. Ontario wouldn't accept my BC ID and my divorce papers officially certified by the courts.

Normally, there's a local or state/provincial office or court clerk that can issue certified copies of things like birth, marriage and/or change of name certificates.

@huntingdon In my mom's case, she was born and married in another province in eastern Canada. I'm sure there are others in the same situation. The registry office (privatized service, btw) told her she would need to contact the other province for proof of marriage. I'm just so glad we found the original. Now, another visit in a week or so and fingers crossed they'll accept the 1964 paper document that is mostly handwritten.

@JEmphatically Very glad I did all the paperwork to get my passport with my married name before the Trump administration nonsense as they're attempting this here in the USA. I'll be sure to NOT let that lapse. My USA naturalization is in my former married name, which I kept after my divorce, so it's a daisy chain of names in my case, as I'm hyphenated with my maiden name and husband's surname now.
