"We see a future where intelligence is a utility, like electricity or water, and people buy it from us on a meter..." -- Sam Altman

@amici @lykso @cwebber I think that is an oversimplification even for the time, but in any case we don't live in the 19th century anymore and people have had a lot of different thoughts on both anarchism and communism since then. as such many anarchists these days don't identify as communists and do not necessarily share positions you might see as defining for communism.
I agree it's a simplification, but I also have issues with those who try to take away the historical context of anarchism, such as to describe vague and inconsistent relationships with the state and authority overall
ancaps and "lifestyle anarchists" come to mind
in my opinion all anarchists are communists, otherwise their use of the term anarchism is highly suspect - I certainly would like to know why they think their position is significantly different to an ancom

@amici @elexia @cwebber I definitely tend to think of myself as some form of small-c "communist" under which many positions may fall, including anarchist ones.
I recognize that there are people who appropriate the term "anarchist" without understanding the self-contradictory nature of their position, most notably ancaps.
But again, I need to read more.

There you go, there it is. Yup.
@cwebber the time between people uncovering fascists' hidden motivations and them saying the quiet part out loud continues to shrink. they're practically scrambling over themselves to shout about how evil they are from the rooftops.

@cwebber wait, they don't recognize Internet service as a utility...

@AlexanderVI @cwebber So? How did it go?

I'm not claiming that they're right, that you are actually buying "intelligence" from them by the meter, I think that's misleading.
But also, the fact that that's the *framing* goes to show to you that they absolutely, completely want it to be, and want to sell intellectual slavery, as far as they can get it.
Isn't that slightly overdramatic? It's just a bit of marketing hype

@gotofritz I don't think so. But it's a deeper topic.

@kate @paul_ipv6 @cwebber And making our ponds and lakes go dry in the process. I'm looking at you, Ice Mountain.

@cwebber The closest they've ever come to a consistent definition of intelligence is something that can do economically valuable work.
Under that definition, what he's proposing is that you would rent the ability to do work, at all, from him. And that is in keeping with the ai/vc set's stated goals and past actions.
@jenniferplusplus I think there's a word for that
sl.. sla.. um slavery! Gotit?

@violetmadder @lykso @elexia @cwebber
never heard of the term "Small C communism" being used in those times, it sounds like a very modern turn of phrase
but I know "anarchist" was initially applied as an insult, and was then later adopted by would-be anarchists as a way to describe themselves
before that the term, as a way to describe a political position, comes from the work of Proudhon, which I haven't read but would like to some day

@cwebber @jalefkowit The next DMCA will criminalize independent thought that doesn’t rely on the intelligence utility

@jenniferplusplus @cwebber it’s the value portion that’s terrifying, beyond the implications of some tech bro claiming all of humanity’s collective online output as their own. If 99% of people’s value has been labor (synonymous with “intelligence” here), and that labor is offloaded, there’s no value of people anymore. Capitalism: this breaks the market for the thing selling labor back to labor. (Techno Feudalism: intelligent people are worthless, expendable.)
-
@cwebber Every day radicalizes me more. I need to figure out what flavor of communist I am now.
@lykso @cwebber better not, “love” the people from western countries glorifying communism. Come to us to Eastern Europe, we will show you monuments of remembrance of victims of communism, and you hopefully will understand you are talking nonsense. Communism and Nacism should never exist. Shame on people who glorify any of those brutal despotic systems.
