    btw. Context. I'm both a millennial*, disappointed, an expat (well, immigrant) and own multiple Scandinavian armchairs. So THIS BOOK IS ABOUT ME.

    *Early 1980s kid. Wooooot. (don't talk to strangers on the street; ok!; [uses the windows 95 pc to talk to heaven's gate cult members on the internet instead]; do you know if we have "the internet" Pepijn?; Uhm, don't think so, I spend all my time browsing MS Encarta dad!).

    oh ffs. This book is about our livingroom. It's The Devil Wears Prada all over again.

    If within the next five pages the author mentions a DUPLO cow I will read anything the Europeans podcast will ever recommend.

    Edit: and for the sake of completion. We have neither a full copy of the New Yorker nor a rare first edition of a Kraftwerk LP. To compensate though.. A framed front page of the New Yorker (view on the world) and some 'rare' bits of actual Space Shuttle (scrapped after STS-82).

      Uhm. Just noticed (am using an ereader with page numbers off) I'm a third of the way in the book and it still reads as if the author is just setting the scene.
      Every sentence is a descriptive one, as if an impersonal external voice is narrating it from the sky. I strongly dislike this type of writing. Admittedly it works though as I'm drawn in the book.

      I do not relate as "oh that's me" to the two main protagonists. And that's good as for now I don't like 'm.

      No lego cows.

        @Pepijn ooph, I recall giving a presentation in high school for Dutch I really struggled with: Dubbelspel by Frank Martinus Arion. It also started very descriptive. I got through the first 34 pages (page number from memory), all of which was someone describing a garden on Curaçao, which flowers were there, which exact shade of green the grass was, the low afternoon sun etc. etc. I gave it a really poor review. The story took ages to begin and the book lost me before that point.

          "An egg became more famous than the pope."

          I've been on the internet since the late 1990s. I'm absolutely "in" with memes and shit.

          That said. I don't remember this at all (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instagram_egg). That makes me wonder how much it spread outside the app based entertainment websites like Instagram etc.

          Before this post, did you hear of the 2019 world record egg?

              Oops. I edited the post (as I wrote 1999 instead of 2019) and wiped the 40ish votes it had (about 70% no) Apologies to the people who had already participated.

                            @Pepijn

                            Been building internet sites & data since '93-94! never tried Instagram's, tick-tock's or many of the other profitable "control by mad people pass times" many waste their lives on!
                            The grandchildren worry me & how life, their life is now!

                            BTW, I even have a 'snatcher button' on my TV remote there I get either muted people telling me all about cheapo cremations, smelly people sniffing laundry (obviously not into gardening?) and dancing and covered in food or mud, 15 mins an hour lost?
                            Or a different channel!

                            Bring back pubs & clubs & sports, face to face talking like we used to do?
                            Possibly that might stop much of the Americanisation of our young?

                            Those of our young bought up on shoot out, stabbing, killing & mad car destruction games that make so much money & all for their don't care creators & company owners, this has seemingly changed once safe streets to danger zones.

                            It's time for more coffee.....

                                  And that's just page one!

                                  Anyway. I've now started reading the [quote] 'hit novel' [/] ‘Perfection’ by Vincenzo Latronico.

                                  I'll stick any additional observations I have to this thread (as I suspect there's some, and as I suspect most people are actively not interested in my observations: please don't kick me out of the #bookclub).

                                      Here's my review of Perfection. I'm looking forward to learning what other @europeanspodcast listeners think of the book.

                                        @Pepijn @europeanspodcast

                                        "In 1780 Anna and Tom would be Dutch expats (Anna’s dad being a Dutch VOC captain) living a safe middle class adventure as small time nutmeg traders in the Saint-Germain neighbourhood of Paris."

                                        See, that book I would like to read. I think it'd probably be impossible to make it not a little bit interesting.
