  3. Fun fact to keep you awake tonight: Just had a chat with an atmospheric chemist and the best comparison she could come up with for the pollution that would result from burning up 1 million "AI datacenter" satellites in Earth's atmosphere is a nuclear war.

Why can't we have the future where we are led by scientists and not the stupidest assholes?

@sundogplanets Guess it's a good thing it's a near-impossibility to get that many into the atmosphere though it's not like I want half of that number either, even a tenth feels like a lot.

@sundogplanets considering the mass of material transported to atmosphere by under- and above-ground nuclear tests, that seems to be off by a couple of orders of magnitude.

@sundogplanets nearly 10 years ago “we have had enough of experts” today, it has completely come true. The experts are almost totally sidelined.

i remember all the civil rights stuff from the 60s/70s and we're right back there again too. constant vigilance is needed to not regress.

i love science, since the assumption in science is that you always need to know where you've been, what's worked and not worked, and hopefully you don't revisit dead ends.

@sundogplanets If they want to put a server farm in orbit, how about at the L4 or L5 Lagrange points for the Earth-Moon system? They'd be in direct sunlight most of the time, reducing the need for batteries. Less impact on telescopes as well.

For Elon's LLM, let's put it at L3 (Earth/Sun system), which would have some real benefits for the rest of us: with the sun in the way, it would be hard to "talk" to it.

@sundogplanets Is it possible that behind closed doors, Musk et al think Kessler syndrome will reverse climate change? Is that the level of myopic stupidity we could be dealing with here?

I mean, the Epstein class do seem to sincerely believe that technology will somehow save *them*, even if billions of the rest of us are wiped out in the process. 🤷🏻‍♂️
