Another attempt at creating an icon for a grop of sports.

Another attempt at creating an icon for a group of sports, displayed inside the pitch and as raw icon. Is it understabdable?
@anderslund Doesn’t immediately make me think of ‘sport’

@anderslund I don't even understand the word. What's a «grop»? (Or did you just mistype «group», i.e., it's about areas or amenities usable for several distinct sports?)

@das_g Yes, misspelling - fixed. There are many variants of this activity, like bowls, boules, petanque etc. The icon I had was absolutely not obvious.

@anderslund Ah, so not generally for any arbitrary «group of sports» (such as a an area usable for both basketball and street-hockey), but for specifically the group of related-to-each-other ball-throwing sports that are boules-like.
For those, it'd be good if the balls were represented by actual circles/disks, rather than circle-similar-but-not-perfectly-round blobs. And maybe give the big disks some inside lines, similar to the markings the actual balls sometimes have: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bocce_set2.jpg

@das_g Yes. Very fine details are difficult to produce, but I did think of lines. They are perfectly round in my svg. Possibly the conversion to SDF format (using spreet) causes the not-roundness.

@anderslund Can any other distinguishing characteristics be added without resorting to too fine details? As shown on the map, I might not even recognize the current proposal as an icon and might mistake it for a map feature with that geometry.

@anderslund Maybe it's easier to show an (abstracted) person performing the sport, like in https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:Curling-borderless.svg and many of the examples in https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Category:Sport_icons ?

@das_g I haven't been able to find a functoinal icon for these sports. Many of the well functioning icons I have are without persons, so I thought I would give it a try. This is the one I have with a person.

@anderslund Not at all, no. I would’ve assumed a rendering issue if I saw that in the wild

@PattaFeuFeu Some context maybe? And I changed the icon a bit, including fixing the roundness issue.

@anderslund Still not clear, unfortunately. Are the different sports so diverse that there’s no common denominator that could be iconified? Or are balls the common denominator and that’s how that one came to be?

@PattaFeuFeu Bowls, boules, petanque, boccia - you win if your ball (or "wood" in bowls) are closest to the "pig" - the smaller ball. In GB, bowls is dominant, elsewhere (afaik) boules/petanque.
Thanks for caring

@anderslund Ahh, CoMaps displays them like this. Still not entirely sure if I had gotten that just from the icon, at first glance, but at least it’s slightly better for me as the balls are at least somewhat recognisable.
They usually come in packs of six with the wooden small one in the middle, right? Maybe you could toy with that idea?

@PattaFeuFeu Thanks again. I am not able to get comaps on my pc (linux) or on my phone to zoom that much in on that icon - it is not interpretable on either device. Kinda the same idea of mine, but I find it worse. I will try and see if I can add lines, that also requires me to improve my inkscape skills

@anderslund That’s the neat thing about open source: https://github.com/comaps/comaps/blob/1e6d5bcbc4be968cf9decf2ba749c0c674ac1853/data/styles/default/dark/symbols/boules-m.svg#L2

The Noun Project also has a variety of similar options: https://thenounproject.com/browse/icons/term/petanque/

@PattaFeuFeu Oh, the noun project is new to me, I haven't bumped into that while searching!

@PattaFeuFeu Not usable due to licensing, though.
