A few months ago, a client asked me to shave about €200 a month off our agreement. "We’re trying to cut back on expenses", he said, "to boost our cash flow." I was hesitant, but hey, I agreed.

Fast forward to this morning: one of his team members calls me asking for help because - and I quote - "both Claude and ChatGPT are giving me answers that just don't feel right."

I asked for a little context, only to find out they had upgraded to the top-tier plans for both AIs so they could "solve problems on their own without bothering me."

So, I dropped my client a line: we either revert to our original agreement, or we wrap up this collaboration effective immediately.

Asking me for a discount just to throw far more money at AI subscriptions - only to call me anyway when the bots fail - is, to say the least, a slap (or slop?) in the face.

you should have requested +500 a month increase

I had the same happen to me but the client totally dropped the maintenance part of a deployment and said his agent would do the patching... two months later the hosted services have been broken by the clanker and they are paying my double to debug and fix the agent's mess

@stefano I got hit by AI at work recently too. We had a concerning cpu spike after deploying a new release. As soon as I noticed I determined the cause and created a ticket for myself - just then PM dropped in with a multiple pages (AI) analysis why I was wrong. Fixed their stuff the whole day, deployed - cpu usage unchanged. Made my fix afterwards in 2hrs overtime - problem solved 😈 . 4 weeks passed - still waiting for feedback 🤪

Yeah a friend learned this the hard way when he used an ai trying to fix his PI instead asking me directly.

He ended up wrecking it so much that even I could not help him to rescue the install and he had to reinstall.
The pi was so broken so badly that only the rescue shell sorta worked. The package manager was broken beyond repair.

@stefano the absolute cheek! 😭 The cash flow comment was already a red flag (because what about your cash flow and your bills) but they wanted to double dip on the disrespect and ask for help when it didn't work out. Sheesh! 💀 Definitely a sloppy slap in the face.

It would have ben cheaper if they kept the original agreement and kept AI out of it. (Do we need to start writing AI fix clauses? It'll cost ya double if not triple in time and money! So silly and not worth it!)

They should learn their lesson but they won't. 🫠🤦‍♂️

Now you can ask €400/HR because AI related issues are more complex and require more efforts.

@zleap people think they can replace competence and experience with AI, without knowing what they're doing. This way, they're causing a lot of damage, because the AI will always have an apparently perfect solution. Apparently is the key, here.

@stefano @zleap I saw somebody say that people love using AI to do other people's jobs, but aren't happy when other people use them to do their jobs. When you don't know what you're doing, you don't notice how poor a job the AI is doing.

It's basically the same phenomenon as Gell-Mann Amnesia now that I think about it.

                                    @stefano it's a sad trend that companies believe a LLM is a consultant in a box 😞

@stefano I'm sorry about your shitty client.

Years ago I did consulting for a large financial client (who were in a legal bind) and it leaked publicly that they were going to ask all their freelancers to significantly reduce their rates. So, doing the same work, but for less.

So many went along with the request. It blows my mind how willing we are to accommodate capitalism.
