    @arianvp

    For the longest time I wished Google maps would understand that some destinations are extended objects, like, it doesn't matter which side of this area you enter because you're there once you get there. But it only knew about points.

    Now they seem to have added extended targets, but they still only have one "point" that is the target, so no matter where in the target you're headed to ut always sends you to the same gate or entrance. Which is worse because now you can't override them.

    @resuna @arianvp I have been known to enter latitude and longitude as my destination. Override that, algorithm!

    Next year: "there's nothing at (lat,long), did you mean {location of nearest advertiser}?"

      @alan @arianvp

      It will do that. I deliberately set a landmark at the east most parking entrance of the building. It still navigated me to the southern entrance, because that is apparently where it believes there is an entrance to that block. And then its plotted route included internal directions inside the parking floor to the eastern entrance.

        @monoxane @jj @amyisard @alper @arianvp @noodlemaz it depends on where, e.g. the us requires all agencies to publish static gtfs feeds, and many also publish free realtime feeds in gtfs-rt. for the nyc subway they're linked, no auth required, from https://api.mta.info/#/subwayRealTimeFeeds

          Google Maps also stopped showing connections that involve walks longer than 500 meters. It'll just be like "no its impossible to reach the other end of Berlin in half an hour by public transport. You need to change 6 times". Because it refuses to let me cross a bridge to another busstation because US brained people dont believe in legs.

          Because I had most recently used it for crossing the city, google maps recently offerred me walking directions from Boston to Montreal. (I'm a fast walker but no.)

            @monoxane @jj @amyisard @alper @arianvp @noodlemaz it's occasionally possible to scrape data for gtfs-rt, e.g. it's been done for amtrak, but for most sites it would take too long to scrape their realtime data to be useful. non-real-time data is easier, i've done it for china and am currently working on doing it for russia.

              I was trying to answer your question "why do we even need sidewalks?"

              We need sidewalks if we want our human spaces to be navigable by non walking people.

                    @arianvp@functional.cafe As far as I am aware, the only way to disable the auto-dubbing is if the creator of the video turns off approximately twelve settings in their creator dashboard. Which is fucking insane but that's where we're at.

                        @arianvp one time, in Brussels, I asked the front desk of the hotel if they could give me directions somewhere on a very nice day. “I can call a taxi for you…” “But it’s only 2 or 3 kilometers?” “Well, Americans don’t like walking!”

                          Google Maps managed to lose a river in Ireland. The last section of one, anyway.
                          Go past the western edge of county Dublin until you find the Intel Ireland campus. Zoom in and follow the river (Rye Water) that runs behind it, until it hits an aqueduct.
                          In reality, the aqueduct carries a canal/rail line high above the river valley, allowing the Rye to eventually reach the Liffey. Google Maps shows the river flowing directly into the canal, on a neat 90 degree T junction, with no spills.

                            Between the the aqueduct and the Rye/Liffey confluence, there's a river-shaped gap in Google Maps. An unexplained meandering green area of undeveloped land cuts through a residential area, where every housing estate has a river-themed place name. It's almost like someone is trying to drop hints that a river is very close by.

                            I tried fixing it in GMaps more than 10 years ago but it doesn't allow rivers to be edited.

                            Every other map seems to have the full Rye Water present and correct.
