"AI adoption raises homework scores by 18% and reduces completion time by 30%, but lowers monthly exam scores by 20% within six months. High-stakes entrance-exam scores fall by 18 and 24%, with the full penalty emerging only after about two years. The losses are largest in social science subjects, followed by STEM and languages, and are especially large for junior students, high-achieving students, and boys." 2/3

@steter @gvwilson When I was teaching, kids pasted wholesale from Wikipedia.

I don't get the moral panic tbh. Humans are lazy and get found out eventually 🤷

@dajb @gvwilson Wikipedia wasn't burning down forests and pushing fascist ideology, so there's that. It wasn't entwining itself into everyone's lives. It wasn't churning out images of student heads on naked bodies. It wasn't destroying rare books to make a buck. It wasn't attaching fossil fuel energy to its mega data centers, and it wasn't buying land in every state to do it. And then there is what it does to people who rely on it. AI chat bots have encouraged suicide. I have a problem with it anywhere near a classroom.

@steter @gvwilson "AI" isn't doing these things. Big Tech is doing these things.

I'm no apologist for either but you're conflating several things.

The point I was making was in relation to the focus of the thread which was on student grades and homework.

And don't get me started on assesment design otherwise we'll be here all day.

"The learning losses are concentrated among roughly 80% of AI users whose behavior is consistent with homework outsourcing, as indicated by exceptionally short homework completion time coupled with high homework scores. AI users who maintain similar homework completion time as non-AI users experience small learning losses." 3/3

@gvwilson This is on purpose. They are desperate to push ways to use AI which reduce cognitive ability and maximize dependence. This is why ads push asking AI for advice on health care and legal advice.

It's also a reason why AI does not give attribution, because then the user might use the attribution and their own brain to determine the meaning of what's actually in the references, as well as assess the credibility of the sources.

@gvwilson They're going to have to make hand-written answers for everything the norm again. And compare your homework writing with your in-class writing.

It won't be a perfect solution, but it'll considerably undercut "getting the computer to do it".

                      @isaackuo @gvwilson
Attribution only hurts the LLM's image. If attribution is provided, the source gets credit for the knowledge, not the LLM. If attribution is usually provided but sometimes isn't, people become suspicious that statements without attribution are fabrications rather than actual knowledge. If attribution is never provided, people don't know when they should be suspicious.

My post is arguing that the point of going to school is to learn, just like how the point of going to the gym is to improve physical fitness.

My post is a simple word substitution of the quote in the original above which showed that students are defeating the point of going to school by getting a bot to do the work for them.

Put differently, the homework isn’t being done for any purpose other than so the student can learn, just like the weights in a gym don’t need lifting.

You could even take the analogy further and say that not only does the robot not help with anything outside the gym, the lack of exercise causes muscle atrophy resulting in less strength over time.

You have to explain it to some folks because, uh, ai.

@SeanPLynch this person seems to think homework is assigned for learning.

I use this exact metaphor with students. Contrary to the stories you may hear about College Stidents Today, they’re quite receptive to it and most already agree before I’ve started saying it.

I dunno, I'd send a robot to gym in my place. Not that I'd ever walk into a gym in the first place...

I mean, people do; if you judge people by the number of steps, some will put their phone in one of those magnetic moving cradles
