Answering doesn't change the message settings: as long as you don't change (before sendibg the post) answers on public posts will be public, and private posts will be private. Same for language settings: I changed from French to English (see right button below).
Unfortunately, with the Mastodon user interface, the public/private setting can easily get overseen. A typical trap especially for beginners.

Did I recommend you already to follow the account @FediTips ? They are teaching you by regular posts. Very helpful especially for beginners
