I'm into model trains. It's a hobby that attracts people who like to explore. If for some individuals tinkering with LLM fits into that I kinda get their interest.
Over the last half year small companies and hobbyist alike started blatantly sharing LLM generated images though. And it truly puzzles me: in a hobby based around physically modelling a small version of the real world, what's the point?!?
Is your hobby being contaminated by #AI slop as well?

@Pepijn #FiberArts hobbies are flooded by slop. Made up patterns, faking knitting or crocheting tutorials, it's everywhere.
If you're experienced enough, you spot them at a glance. It's for the beginners that i worry. This may be blocking some people who want to give it a shot and don't understand why they can't reach the result in the picture. -

@Pepijn I think at least for people selling stuff, it might be that taking pictures of scale models and related items is hard, and expensive. At least for ad purposes. You’d need a good camera and lens, lighting, the works, and you need to know how to take the pictures.
It’s much easier and faster to just generate the pictures.
I don’t approve, but I’m just trying to figure out why somebody would do this.
For hobbyists… I got nothing.

@Pepijn I saw a poster in a shop window yesterday, advertising a local Creative Art Fair. Which is a very good thing to have, I'm sure they'll have got a creative artistic person to throw together a poster.

@pare @Pepijn The main point here is: you need to know how to take pictures. You need skill.
Half the pictures (ok, maybe not half but quite a few) in my model railway magazines are taken outside: instant good lighting.
Using AI is, in my opinion, mostly just an easy way of circumventing the skill issue.

@Pepijn I'm in to model trains / railways as well and I'm glad to see the photos in the magazines I read regularly are all real.

@Pepijn this reminds me of stories I heard from women when I was app-dating in the Pacific Northwest where guys would post photos of themselves holding fish they caught. (the women all wondered aloud to me why men did this, when no women they knew found it appealing)
the worst offenders were those who Photoshopped themselves with bigger fish. who's that even for?
