@fesshole Absolutely. Currently looking for doing rewarding work full-time, but volunteering is also great.
Do it. Remind yourself that you're not a commodity, and people aren't commodities, and there's more to life than working all day for someone else's profit.

@fesshole Seconding the recommendation to volunteer. I've been unemployed for a few months and it is incredibly grounding to put an hour into a library, a garden, a community farm, or whatever else.
I think a lot of people get into FOSS because its kind of like volunteering. But, it's incredibly rewarding to go to a place meet some people, do a thing that aligns with your values, then go home.
There are also remote volunteering opportunities for people who have physical limitations!

@fesshole @neurovagrant for nyc folks New York Cares is a great way to find volunteer opportunities. everything from one off that can just use your hands for a day, to longer commitments that might involve training. also they bubble up engagements where your special skills, like multi-lingual or professional certifications, would be a help

the woman who ran the food bank i was at for a while had built a whole aquaponics garden in the basement of a housing block
people who volunteer are very likely to be interesting and inspiring

its aquaponics! it is neat! it is a closed loop, soil-less gardening system. it is different from hydroponics in that fish are part of the loop. the fish are what make it aqua
in this case the plants dont need sunlight. but that does limit what plants can be grown in an indoor system like this. but aquaponics doesnt have to be indoors. folks build loops outdoors too
it is very cool and worth a rabbit hole

@fesshole i was a manager in charity outlet I made a lot of money for the red cross and Sense for the deaf and blind and the nicest one was the YMCA I really liked their style it wasent pushy like most

@fesshole In the past, I've done the "adopt a grandparent" thing at assisted living facilities. It was such a rewarding experience!
I'd sure like to do that some more, but the community I live in doesn't seem to have accessible facilities.
