Hi, the Mastodons.
-
@MelodicDinosaur Welcome, now I'm curious what kind of Melodies this Dinosaur creates over a cup of tea.

@dilmandila All sorts! But my favourite thing is when I get to be a harmonic dinosaur with my choir

I don't have any experience of other social media so no expectations but yes, generally friendly is exactly how I've found it too.
Although I came for art and relaxation I've found myself drifting into politics more than I intended, or maybe politics is intruding, but I am advised that running two accounts can be a way to get back if you head too far off course...@OneInterestingFact One for the politics, one for the Bloomscrolling?

@MelodicDinosaur Ooh my son (in London) is looking to get into Linux, what are your top-3 ways to learn.
Ex-pat Brit' living in the high plains desert in the foothills of the rocky mountains.can we have our snow back whoever has it?
@4mc Hi 4mc :).
For me, really I just jumped in one day, but I looked on YouTube a lot for video tutorials where instead of reading advice on forums (which I found confusing) I could watch exactly what they were doing.
On Linux, there are different...Distros? which are like different versions or operating systems. I chose Linux Mint because it's like Windows which I was using before, and I found it very easy to set up the basics. You can also I think run the distro from whatever you're using to install it before you actually commit to installing, so you can play around and see if you like it.
Ooh. Erm - if there's any specific software he relies on now, especially for work etc, maybe check whether it's Linux-compatible or if there are suitable alternatives. There are ways to get e.g. Windows software running on Linux but as a beginner I found that a bit tricky.
I hope your son does try it! I'm not techy but I've found it easier than I thought I would and it's sooo liberating.

Hello and welcome. It's great to meet you.
I see someone has already recommended https://fedi.tips/ . Let me also suggest https://fedi.directory/ as a way to find interesting people to follow and get your timeline kick-started.

@CppGuy Oh brilliant! Thanks

-
Welcome. I see you have many responses of goodwill.
I didn’t see a mention of @FediTips — you might wish to check them out.
@AlsoPaisleyCat Thank you!

@MelodicDinosaur
using mint which is really GUI ...my main thrust is to move away from corporate surveillance state tech. subverted chromebooks to linux mint.@DonChacale I went for Mint, too
-
@MelodicDinosaur Also, I hope you know you can follow hashtags! If you search for #Linux, you'll get an option to follow it, and that's a great way to meet people with common interests. There are loads of neurodiverse people on here including autistic, ADHD (hi!), and AuDHD like you.
@OrionKidder Thank you! That's really kind - and it's lovely to hear from so many lovely people who are either neurodivergent or who don't seem to have neuro...normative? expectations of people?

@MelodicDinosaur @TheBreadmonkey @greem
Ben! Take that "ooh, fresh meat" glint out of your eyes and remember you're vegan.
What did we tell you? Only Swedes and Human Beans.
@ratcatcher @TheBreadmonkey @greem Am not beans, no monch!

-
@MelodicDinosaur Welcome to the fediverse. You can find your people using hashtags. Hashtags are free.
@MelodicDinosaur The welcome to the fediverse people have found you. It is good. Also. The block tool has many custom uses if it is too much noise.
-
@MelodicDinosaur Welcome to Mastodon. I find it very nice here. I'm also learning heaps while linuxing along. We had a four-day down and then figured it out. As I said, heaps, hahahaha!
@Mimsybean Ooof, haha, yep!
Lots of *learning*... -
@MelodicDinosaur
I am an older autistic gentleman who is getting sick and tired of being older. But I don't bite. There are some instances which are only for autistics, such as the one I'm on, autistics.life. also depending on how accepting of different kinds of people you are, there are lots of good people on beige.party.
I am peripherally a member of the Bodhi Linux team. I don't know what I'm talking about most of the time, but I try to be helpful.@bardmoss Hi, thanks for the welcome :). I like the look of your page and in general how inclusive it seems to be around here.

Hi, the Mastodons. I don't know how this works yet or how active I'll be here, but I thought I'd introduce myself.
I'm a UK-based female AuDHD adult, choosing to remain mostly anonymous. I'm really just curious about how the Fediverse works - I can be ambivalent about social media but I thought this sounded refreshing in contrast to the big, powerful platforms which feel scarier to me by the minute. I've also been getting to grips with Linux recently, and am thinking about other ways within my limited means and courage to try to be involved with more of the small things that are about moving away from exploitation and towards caring for each other.
Take care out there
@MelodicDinosaur Why did you took so long? Welcome! -

@MelodicDinosaur welcome!

@peachymist Thank you! Best wishes to all of you.

@MelodicDinosaur It's that kind of space around here. There was a long-standing practice of putting trigger warnings on images with direct eye contact. It's furies, anarchists, Linux nerds, and neudivergents around here.

@AlsoPaisleyCat Thank you!
