For four months now, my phone has been sending me increasingly regular messages about an available update that will improve my productivity and creativity and health and wealth and also bring about world peace. I don’t want the AI they’re lying about. I don’t want an update to switch back on the few AI settings I previously managed to hunt down and switch off. So I have been hypervigilant to check that Auto-update remains off and that the phone never ran out of battery or restarted.

As the Update Available notification messages increased, my phone became increasingly sluggish. I became a conspiracy theorist. I wondered: is this Big Tech’s way of saying ‘nice phone, be a shame if anything happened to it because you refuse to update.’
