@zackwhittaker note that a recent decision from a eu data protection authority established that if anybody use this kind of things in the workplace, the employer is accountable for the data processing.

That would mean the employer has to make sure things are done according to the GDPR, including explicit agreement of everyone recorded before the recording starts, I guess. So as soon as anyone in the office uses such glasses, report the company because there is no way this can be compliant. -

So as soon as anyone in the office uses such glasses, report the company because there is no way this can be compliant.@gnaddrig @zackwhittaker yep the reasoning is that companies must have internal rules and policies to frame the use of those technologies and are responsible to protect the data if their employees. I agree with that part.

Yes. A good label to shame them, but as you write this isn’t just about perversion: lewd images are readily available online. Doing it in person without consent is about exercising control. It’s a gateway drug to ultimate control, i.e., r*pe. For me, ‘pervert’ doesn’t quite capture the need to take, to control, to disregard another’s humanity. Oh look, I just listed 3 defining traits of Big Tech execs, the lewd ones and non-lewd alike. -

@zackwhittaker Could also be called BC or birth control glasses as an INS agent embassy Moscow called his butt ugly glasses. When he bought them he said he wanted the ugliest glasses they had. They were pretty awful.

My wife is blind. She uses smart glasses as assistive technology for her disability.
While I agree there is a pervert problem, hers is a legitimate use case for them.

@zackwhittaker @taylorlorenz I wonder if people know: As soon as anyone lands in Japan, their smartphone will not be able to take a photo without the shutter sound. It is built in for all smartphones in accordance with Japanese laws against perverts spying on women with their phones with the invention of cameras on phones.
I wonder if similar things can be done to require these kind of glasses to emit a loud shutter sound or something to alert people. -

@zackwhittaker For me, it’s not the fact that these glasses exist that’s questionable, that’s just a normal technological development, but rather the question of why people are buying them, causing them to become mainstream and find their way into our everyday lives. What problem do they solve that would make me willing to give up my privacy and desperately hand over my hard-earned money to the big tech companies?
