                                @aud @danirabbit @griotspeak right like this is the thing, Tolkien was trying hard to make a mythos that's distinct from any real thing and original, and yet the core metamyth is as Christian as it's possible to be

                                like, each of his Ages ends with the downfall of the greatest remaining evil power.... as if evil is a thing with a specific face, as if stopping an individual makes change in the world
