Kind wild how the whole tech industry is just people who did and didn’t get The Lord of The Rings

@aud @danirabbit A lazy but accurate summary—in my opinion—of like at least two thirds of the plot is a bunch of people, in sequence, going “that Sauron guy hoodwinked you too? Man, we have to do something about that guy before it’s too late because he is a scheming villain who wants to trick everyone”
@griotspeak@soc.mod-12.com @danirabbit@mastodon.online It's a good thing Tolkien didn't draw super obvious comparisons to Lucifer and his fall or anything, too...

@aud @danirabbit @griotspeak right like this is the thing, Tolkien was trying hard to make a mythos that's distinct from any real thing and original, and yet the core metamyth is as Christian as it's possible to be
like, each of his Ages ends with the downfall of the greatest remaining evil power.... as if evil is a thing with a specific face, as if stopping an individual makes change in the world

@danirabbit There are two types of people in the software world, those who got lotr and those who think they are binary
@alatiera @danirabbit wait but

Something something there are 10 types of people -
“Oh but I’d use the ring to protect Gondor”. Sure bud.
@danirabbit This VC funding is a gift!

‘But if you’ll pardon my speaking out, I think my master was right. I wish you’d take his Ring. You’d put things to rights. You’d stop them digging up the Gaffer and turning him adrift. You’d make some folk pay for their dirty work.’
‘I would,’ she said. ‘That is how it would begin. But it would not stop with that, alas! We will not speak more of it. Let us go!’

@danirabbit Noo noo, it is fine. We put a lot of guard rails in place to keep the Ring from turning evil. Also, ignore those nine wraiths over there… ahem

Kind wild how the whole tech industry is just people who did and didn’t get The Lord of The Rings
@danirabbit wait, is there anyone in the tech industry who *did* get The Lord of The Rings?

@danirabbit There are two types of people in the software world, those who got lotr and those who think they are binary
@alatiera @danirabbit I've still not seen/read it, I'm also barely in this industry anymore, make of that what you will

@danirabbit Gandalf: they delved too greedily and too deep, and disturbed that from which they fled, Durin's Bane.
GenAI: Moria is great source of mithril. Let's delve into that!

@annika @danirabbit I pass the test. I will diminish, and go into The West, and remain Tyla.

These are the same people who spent two years whining "Rian Johnson thinks the past should die and you should kill it if you have to!" -
“Oh but I’d use the ring to protect Gondor”. Sure bud.
Oh they totally would. And then once finished they'll move their military to Mordor because of the incredible forges and its unmatched defences. And since all these Orcs are without a leader they might as well provide some. Might need to crack a few skulls to get the message across but there's gotta be some redeemable Orcs there. Oh, and there's this perfectly good black fortress we could use now that Sauron has been defeated, etc...

@danirabbit Related: slopbros who think the computer in Star Trek is an "AI" (psst: it's not, it's just a command-line with speech-to-text).
Ugh.
@thomholwerda @danirabbit even the holodeck had primitive programs until the Bynars upgraded it.
I'd say the episode where Moriarty escaped the sandbox of the holodeck might have been but they were shitting bricks.

@fullywoolly yeah, Data and Lore were pretty much the only sentient machines and Starfleet kept trying to do tests on them because they didn't understand how to do that.
