@jonny I have been made to think about this by living in through The Years 2020 and I have a weird theory that people believe that the computer generating it will be more “efficient”. Efficiency is a hand wavy metric here that has more to do with feelings BUT it is also about “AI can quickly make a map and I don’t have to bother looking for a good one”

Agreed... Back in 1996 I and 3 other chemist friends developed a sociological thesis: A) 90% of the population is incredibly stupid and B) there is no lower limit for stupidity.
Ok, not totally serious, that all was based on observations in a vacation resort in Spain... But it seems we are making an effort to get there. And this "AI" craze is accelerating it. It is depressing.

In a way, I'm not surprised. Years ago, we'd see news of people following non-AI Google Maps without really looking at their surroundings.

People vastly underestimate the amount of knowledge and practice that's required to do many of the things they want to do. It's the whole reason the techbros push AI and talk about "democratizing" art, coding, etc.

They can't do it themselves in one go, don't want to practice and learn, so someone else must be holding them back; here's the AI doing it for you.
