    @Kerplunk @MissConstrue

    The problem is not having alternatives. We do, it's called SWIFT and it's headquartered in Belgium, i.e. Europe.

    The problem is, that the USA were given provisions to interfere with swift, for – uh – reasons. Technically these provisions could be cut off and removed so with the stroke of a pen, and SWIFT pulled out of the reach of the USA again.

    But implementing that would require political spine to step up to the USA.

      @Kerplunk @MissConstrue

      If I had any say in these matters, then I'd see that Germany (and the rest of the EU) liquidated all their US Treasury bonds in a single, coordinated stroke (ideally also coordinating with Japan).

          This is a pretty big deal, flying mostly under the radar. It goes to show a couple of things:

          The only sovereign nations on earth are the US, China and Russia. The US has just proven that it can debank anyone it wants, with the twitch of a pen, with the exception of those protected by the other powers. There is no legal oversight, no court approval, no way to appeal...just defacto decisions by a narcissist with nukes.

          Nobody is safe while these people are in charge. If the US can make a group of Italian volunteers who created a service that was proton before proton equal a hotbed of terrorists to global banks and DNS resolvers with nothing more than "I said so", then y'all...ain't a one of us that hasn't done something a fascist doesn't like.

          @MissConstrue Yah. Europe is not sovereign. We are client states of the USA.

          No court, no jury, no legal review. Just a stroke of a felt pen.

              @MissConstrue Russia has become a client state of China. Their economy wouldn't survive without China and they wouldn't make any major decision without Chinese approval. So it's really down to US and China.

                  The US bond market is going to collapse in 2027 anyway, due to the current investment round of the pension funds going to lapse then. Between that, and the short term investing that's par for the course with typical 401k retirement funds you're looking at a financial termination shock that's going to curb stomp the whole US bond market either way.

                          100% true. Add to that the inevitable coming food crisis because crops aren’t getting picked because of the Trumpian jihad on anyone tanner than envelopes.
                          If things stay on the current trajectory, the US is heading for revolution. And it will be terrifying, for everyone. So much is tied to American economic growth, and that “growth” has been tied to about six men for the last five years. When this tulip craze blows up, it’s taking everyone with it.

                                  @sesivany You know, at this point, I think I might accept China taking over the US. Look at what they've done to their poverty rates, home ownership and educational achievements. In just this century they've turned a behemoth around from Mao's disastrous policies into a country where poverty and homelessness have almost been eradicated. They have zero medical bill bankruptcy. They punish executives who break the social contract.

                                  Between 2008 and today, they have laid in 50,000km of hs rail. You can get to any part of the country from any other part of the country easily.
                                  If I want to visit my sister in Boston, from Dallas, it would take a week and cost 1700 to go by rail.

                                  From where I'm sitting, China doesn't look so bad. Then again, I think I've reached despair that we can fix this mess before it all blows up.

                                      #StateDept #terrorism #autistici

                                      I remember (back in 2013) Lavabit (encrypted mail service) shutting down because they wouldn't turn over the fully decrypted email account of one of it's users.

                                      They were told to hand over the TLS Private keys in order to spy on Edward Snowdon, or US Gov't would shut them down. And then they shut themselves down and never handed over a single thing.

                                      In a word, they said to US Govt. - YOU GET NOTHING. You Lose
