    @eclectech heh i mean finnish is extremely productive in rude expletives. like, i could probably list tens of phrases that i've used in such a situation, but i'm not sure if i could say that any one of them is the most common' or 'iconic' phrase.

    @Stoori @eclectech "voi ny vitun tähen" would be my best pick tho probably. Kinda has the same flow and intensity?

          I need a Finnish phrase that is used in the same manner as an exasperated "for fuck's sake" in English.

          I've had two nominations so far, but experience shows there can be some late entries, so feel free to pick 'something else'.

              @eclectech out of those two i’d just say voi vittu. Don’t remember i’ve heard anyone say vittu soikoon. I’d say that it depends on the situation as to which version of voivittu is the best. Finnish cursing is very nuanced 😬 no voi vittu, voi vittujen kevät, ei vittu, ei vittu sentään etc are options 🤔

                @hanna Thanks!

                If it helps with the nuance, the situation I've been using across languages is frustrated, angry, exasperated, slightly sweary response as you read the news headlines.

                  @eclectech i guess 'no voi jumalauta' could be general and common enough to be my pick here

                  @Stoori @eclectech Now that I started to think about this, I agree, it is really difficult to say if one phrase is more common or iconic than others.

                  'No voi jumalauta' is actually pretty good! I was also thinking 'No voi saatana', or 'No voi vittu' or any other nasty word 🤭

                  I don't know why it feels more like "for fuck's sake' when there is 'No' at the beginning, even though it is more like 'Oh' in 'Oh, for fuck's sake'.

                  If someone needs inspiration or a demonstration for frustrated, angry, exasperated, "slightly" sweary expressions in Finnish, there is always this classic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuywUEdkvTM

                    @eclectech "no voihan vittu" is what I said to myself just now. Any of these is fine, 'soikoon' variant a bit dated.

                    Another one you could use is "vittu sentään", there's no One canonical FFS phrase

                        @eclectech "No voi vittu" for me, and you can indicate the level of frustration by how much emphasis you put on the Vs there, like "No vvvvvoivvvittu....."

                          "No voihan nyt Kekkosen peräreikä"

                          Probably not common. "Oh by the butthole of Kekkonen"

                          I would say that the -han is sort of needed.

                          Actual suggestions from personal preference: "voihan vittu!"
                          or
                          "No voihan vittu!"

                          BUT! I am not a native speaker, just a foreign connoisseur.

                            @eclectech ok! I myself would say eivvittu or voi vittujen kevät or just voi vittu in that situation. I guess that soikoon might be used in some other parts of the country. There are major differences across the country 🤔

                              @eclectech The one I invented and like is: "Voi Petterin riisiviinat". Since Sake is a rice wine, that's a bastardized translation of "for pete's sake".

                                @eclectech I'd go for "voi vittu sentään" if "fuck" needs to be there. Otherwise the suggested "no voi jumalauta" feels more appropriate..

                                  It is extremely clear that a second poll will be required 😆

                                  I'll leave this one to run, then gather all the other suggestions, and as it seems that there are MANY options that are appropriate the final choice can be a popularity contest amongst the Finnish fediverse.

                                    I need a Finnish phrase that is used in the same manner as an exasperated "for fuck's sake" in English.

                                    I've had two nominations so far, but experience shows there can be some late entries, so feel free to pick 'something else'.

                                    @eclectech "voihan perse" is also a good one (it means "oh ass"), I think it's more about who's using the phrase whenever it fits, vittu is often considered a more young/teenage swear and some don't like it, it has a type of annoying whiny flair, older ppl use more "jumalauta, saatana, perkele". Depending on severity it could also be "vittu saatanan perse" (cunt devils ass).

                                      @Neotheta Thanks!

                                      Is "jumalauta, saatana, perkele" a single phrase, of three different ones?

                                      Finnish does seem to be a very rich seam of swears (I'm going to do a follow on popularity poll as I do need to narrow it down and there have been a *lot* of new options 😆 )

                                        @eclectech Depends a bit on the context. In a monologue, "(voi) vittu soikoon" is used the same way as English "for fuck's sake". But if you are disagreering with what was just said, one would start with "(ja) vittujen kevät"

                                          @eclectech While you are expecting responders to be fluent in Finnish, you ignore the fact that our grasp of proper FFS usage in English might not be that good, affecting the proposed translations. Maybe add a couple of example sentence in English for us to better understand the nuances you are looking for.
