    @ninawillburger OMG! 😵🤩 Unbelievable. And the restaurators' work!

    And this weaving technique was so good that we have hand-woven bee hives in our small French museum from the 19th century ... still using that weaving style!

    Is it known what material they used?

    @NatureMC They're made from esparto, the grass still used in Spain today to weave baskets!

        9,500 years old! And still intact!
        Mesolithic woven baskets from Spain’s Cueva de los Murciélagos (“Cave of the Bats”) are Europe’s oldest known basketry.
        Thanks to the cave’s near‑zero humidity, organic materials didn’t decay, preserving several baskets for more than 9,000.

        Currently on display at @MuseumHalle mastodon.social , on loan from National Museum Madrid.

        The special exhibition is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in prehistoric archaeology.

                          Here's a paper on them with more details and pictures:
                          https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adi3055

                          There was once a lot more, they were originally discovered by 19th century lead miners "The activity of the miners resulted in plant-based objects being burned and scattered around the outside of the cave, while other baskets and objects were distributed among the Albuñol villagers" 😱

                                    @ninawillburger @MuseumHalle

                                    I got a mushroom picking habit in Canberra.
                                    Transporting the picked mushrooms was a challenge.

                                    If you see computer files as work-product then you could see these baskets as akin to hard drives.
