    @Npars01 @davidgerard I don't know, are you saying the bad take I have already deleted was narcissistic humour?

    @hllizi @davidgerard

    Apologies for the misunderstanding.

    I am not accusing you of weaponizing humor.

    I am accusing billionaires like Musk of doing it though.

    Musk's fans like "transgressive humor" and Musk likes bigoted "humor" for its ability to incite far right riots.

    The Jim Crow and Nazi era was replete with similar examples.

      @davidgerard@circumstances.run @davey_cakes@mastodon.ie @froztbyte@mastodon.social yeah tbh, making up a scenario in which it's okay for them to do this is kinda weird. I've had that curiosity before, and the best way to handle it is to avoid rationalizing the irrational.

      @puppygirlhornypost2 @davidgerard @froztbyte

      I know what you mean.

      I've had to learn more than I wanted to about defamation law and SLAPPS and that's the stuff popping into my head.

      That doesn't mean they couldn't be in the wrong here, and it is disappointing in any case.

        @Npars01 @davidgerard OK, but this was a different topic here, it was about Amnesty International going after people who publish their retracted report on anti-trans organisations with DMCA takedown notices after Rowling threatened to sue.

          Rowling & her fans aren't the only rich people using cleverness to disguise hostility & bigotry

            @Npars01 @davidgerard ah, ok. But that was referring to my suggestion that Amnesty might be exploiting the Streisand effect. Which amounted to defending their reputation by suggesting they are willing to sacrifice it to spread that report. I wasn't being entirely serious, but apparently the idea had also been floated before.

                          @jrdepriest @davidgerard I think that is over simplified. Though I'd love to have someone with legal knowledge take a shot at contextualizing that, I know WAY too little of that subject to come to any confident conclusion.

                              Oversimplified, possibly; but to those who already hate transgender people, that is exactly how it seen. This is evidence that they are right and it is only "the woke left" keeping the abominable idea that trans people aren't just mentally perverts alive. This is proof that they should push even harder to murder and silence transgender people, people like me.

                              It doesn't matter why, honestly. They've done it and the damage cannot be undone. Vile TERFs will celebrate. Shelters will leave abused trans women in the streets to die. Governments will refer to this in policy talks. Judges will use it in their rulings. Amnesty International's actions will lead to deaths.

                              I don't care if they meant it. Their actions are the actions of an organization that hates transgender people at worst and is indifferent to them at best. Outcome is the same either way.

                                  @davidgerard this confuses me, if Amnesty Int'l cannot face one lawsuit by a bunch of weirdos, how can it have any relevance standing up to whole states and international businesses. This is basically self-destruction

                                  @librarysquirrel @davidgerard They're being attacked by J. K. Rowling, a billionaire with an open chequebook, who's threatening to bankroll *every* right-wing crank named in that report when they sue AA *separately*, *and* she has a pile of government ministers on her side.

                                  Basically there's no "freedom of speech" in the UK for non-billionaires. (And arguably never has been, at least in the past 50 years.)

                                      @librarysquirrel @davidgerard You're missing the point: if you run a general campaigning organization, can you afford to risk it being shut down by a malevolent enemy who obsesses over a single issue? Bear in mind AA campaigns for prisoners of conscience everywhere, against genocide, etc. Yes, the TERFs-backed-by-neo-nazi-money stuff is a huge problem, but is it bad enough to justify losing the ability to fight against criminalizing Palestine genocide protestors? Etc.

                                      (There is no good answer.)

                                        @cstross @davidgerard How can an institution lacking the resolve and power to stand up to a bunch of affluent clowns fight against entire fucking states?

                                        Go away please
