@ahatchettjob It's not quite what you're asking for, but the answer to this is kind of a combo of features.
Content warnings are useful if you're about to dive into something potentially upsetting and want to give people the choice of whether to read it or not.
Hashtags and keywords can be filtered, so people don't need to see topics they don't want to see.
The ability to follow hashtags means you don't need to follow someone's account to get just their toots you're interested in.
And you can also disable boosts from someone who tends to boost things quite different from their actual posts.
Probably makes it all sound complicated but what I'm basically saying is your followers have lots of options to customise their feed and you don't need to worry about it beyond tagging things correctly.

But I always find it jarring to navigate a feed that merges all of them together indiscriminately.

I’d love for there to be a way to designate a post as either heavy or light, as important or trivial. And then, allow each person to manage which posts they’re seeing at any given moment.
@ahatchettjob So, there's the obvious hashtag function. That does require others to be using the hashtags, but there's also a "lists function". I'm not entirely sure how that operates, but it seems to me that you could separate out different members using that. I'm going to experiment with that. Is there a way to read how this works? Yes. Am I going to do that? No. It's like raw dogging IKEA. No fun if you read the manual.

You may want to try lists, you'll be able to have different feeds, even exclude accounts from your home feed, it's very useful to group interesting info but not see it all the time, like the news, see this article from @FediTips

@ahatchettjob I filter my feed as needed to either follow a hashtag topic I am interested in (even temporily) or exclude specific tags (you can make lists of tags) as needed. As long as people use tags this generally works for breathing space.

@ahatchettjob a) you can use lists. You can create those under settings.
b) create filters, be generous with yourself
c) use apps that will allow you to restructure your feed and order/structre them. I use the moshidon app and i can set up a hashtag tab or a list tab and switch along. -

@ahatchettjob I love the feed settings in the @IceCubesApp (and others I’m sure!). I can filter out hashtags from my main feed and add new hashtag group feeds.

@donelias @ahatchettjob The ability to exclude a list from the main feed is the crux. That allows you to let the main feed be the catch-all, while still being able to subscribe to noisy sources that you can put in a list that you check when you want to.

@ahatchettjob it's what I liked about old forums, or reddit at one point. You could have your tribe, and talk about a hobby or interest, and there would be this point where you could go into the off-topic part and safely share experiences. And because you had a shared love for whatever, there would a filter, without it becoming a bubble. Threads were slower, and easier to follow and comment on. I really miss 'slow internet'.
@matthijs @ahatchettjob if you’re interested in that community style of social media, there are a couple of fediverse options, piefed and lemmy. Both have a ux that is heavily inspired by Reddit, and you can interact with them from mastodon by @‘ing the community’s account (like @ + community + @ + instance).

Well, there are hashtags and lists, similar to the birdsite. Also there are experiments into groups such as https://about.fedigroups.social There is more work being done towards groups that work across different Fedi platforms by a bunch of players via... I forget the name - something like the Activitypub Social Group (@evan , one of the activitypub founders is part of it) -

My suggestion is LISTS.See the lists option on the side of your Mastodon feed. That is for forming groups of users.
Try putting all your joke people in one section, your #Monsterdon members in another. Etc.
Then you can chose to look at one feed at a time.
I personally prefer a mixed feed with everything all mixed together. I go through and pick out what I want to comment on daily.

I second using content warnings.
The triangle with the exclamation is the content warning symbol. You make a post and have a brief explanation of why is is behind a warning.
You can warn for anything. Nudity, Eye Contact, Food.
More people will object to you NOT using content warnings than they will to your using them. If they want to see, it is just a single click to open. You can also fuzz out images if you think they may worry folk. -

Yes. I do a similar thing. A list of people who were mutuals back in Twitter days. Lists of certain topics here. List of news sources. List of meteorologists and earth-related. List of automated accounts I like. Etc.

Yup, using Lists and then hiding those lists from the main feed would achieve what you want, it would let you create themed mini-timelines that could browse separately from the main timeline. ( https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-the-lists-feature-on-mastodon/ ).
Alternatively, if you're on a computer you might want to try the Advanced Web Interface which lets you split your view into Tweetdeck-style columns ( https://fedi.tips/how-to-activate-mastodons-tweetdeck-style-advanced-web-interface/ ).
