@jamesthomson I’ve used the one ring comparison so much.
AI is too powerful and too tempting. It’s amazing, at first. Then slowly you can’t live without it. Then you realize you no longer know how to write or code without it. You depend on it. And if you quit using it your career and livelihood are at risk.
It absolutely is an apt metaphor.

@jsatk The too powerful and too tempting is very much it in a nutshell. My fears are not about the quality of the output, it’s everything else.

@jamesthomson — I held that before, but I’m more of the opinion that it’s more like the Master Sword, or the Triforce. Yes, capable of yielding great destructive power to the user, but also an amplifier of positive forces. The LOTR analogy is absolutist and hopeless, whereas the Zelda one is more nuanced and hopeful. Either way, we’re pretty powerless, so I chose an analogy to help me through that powerlessness.
